End of an Era

ERATH — Retirement often offers the excitement of a new chapter but accompanies the bittersweet feeling of leaving a place or people you love.
One quote for those retiring or moving says, "You never really leave a person or place you love. Part of them you take with you, and you leave part of yourself behind." Coach Tommie Pillette is the prime example of someone feeling both.

Stingy defense helps North Vermilion reach finals

SULPHUR – The No. 6 North Vermilion Patriots used a stingy defense to defeat the No. 10 Pearl River Rebels 6-1 in the Division II Non-Select semifinals Wednesday night at McMurry Park.
While pitcher Isaac Russell dominated on the mound, only four of the 21 outs recorded were by strikeout.  That means he pitched to contact, trusting his defense to work behind him.
Shortstop Colt Lejeune led the effort with seven putouts.

North Vermilion's Russell was cool as a cucumber in the state semifinals

SULPHUR - Isaac Russell did not let the idea of pitching in his first-ever semifinal state championship game bother him. He was as cool as a cucumber for seven innings on Wednesday night.
Russell was the winning pitcher in the 6-1 win over Pearl River Rebels in the semifinals.
He faced 30 batters and threw 106 strikes and 30 balls.
Russell struck out four, allowed five hits, and scored not one earned run.  Before the semifinal game, Russell had an impressive 1.48 earned run average (ERA). That ERA is now 1.31.
He now improves to 6-2 on the year.
