Baton Rouge Community College coach gives great news to players

Monday morning was signing day for four North Vermilion High athletes.
All four seniors signed to play sports for Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC), located 90 minutes from North Vermilion.
Two signed to play baseball, and the other two signed to play softball.
The two softball players had a pleasant surprise during the signing.
Lady Patriot pitcher Ashton Duhon and infielder Kennedy Kelly had planned to be preferred walk-ons to BRCC. However, that meant they would have to pay their tuition, and there was no guarantee they would make the team.

The Delcambre High Panthers are seeded seventh in the non-select Division IV playoffs and have a first-round bye in the postseason. Five other teams from Vermilion Parish earned bids to the playoffs as well.

Six Vermilion Parish teams earn baseball playoff bids

Six Vermilion Parish baseball teams earned entry into the Louisiana High School Athletic Association state playoffs on Tuesday, led by North Vermilion, the No. 2 seed in non-select Division 2.
Twenty-four teams were chosen for each of the five non-select divisions, and 20 for each of the top four select divisions. Ten teams were chosen in select Division V.
Non-select divisions 1-3 play a best-of-three series from the first round through the quarterfinals. The top eight teams in those divisions draw first-round byes.

Five parish softball teams make the playoffs

Five Vermilion Parish softball teams earned bids to the LHSAA playoffs this year, led by Kaplan, the No. 2 seed in the non-select Division III bracket.
The LHSAA released the playoff brackets on Thursday. First-round games must be played by Monday.
Kaplan (23-8) earns a bye in the first round as the top six teams in all five non-select divisions have byes. Twenty-six teams were chosen in each of the non-select divisions. Twenty-four teams were chosen in select divisions I-IV, with eight teams chosen in Division V.

Joe Heintz named new football coach at North Vermilion High School

Joe Heintz has been named the new head football coach at North Vermilion High School.
On Thursday afternoon, North Vermilion High Principal Denise Lotief recommending the hiring of Heintz as the head coach.
“All of our top candidates had different strengths and backgrounds,” said Lotief. “The six members of the interview committee were able to discuss plans for both football logistics and strengthening our program. Ultimately, we made a decision to select the Coach with the highest interview score.

On Saturday, Angela Dubois Gallet takes a selfie with Jasmine Carson of LSU. Carson turned out to the be star in the finals, scoring 21 points.

Bucket List: In person watch my idol, Kim Mulkey, win her fourth national championship

Angela Dubois Gallet fell in love with watching Kim Mulkey play basketball when Mulkey played for Louisiana Tech from 1980-84. The crazy thing was Gallet was only eight years old.
An eight-year-old girl from Abbeville was star-struck by a college player 250 miles away because of her maternal grandfather, Jake Ussery.
Ussery did not live in Abbeville but made his way at times to watch his granddaughter play basketball.
