Ryan Richard looks for running room during last week’s game against Crowley. Richard is expected to play quarterback tonight against Abbeville. He finished the game at quarterback last week because starter Luke LeBlanc was injured.
Part of a district title within Erath’s reach
The Erath Bobcats head to Wildcat Stadium with the hopes of getting a victory over the Abbeville Wildcats (1-8), which guarantees them part of the District 6-3A title.
District football title and Erath have not been mentioned in the same sentence since 1998.
That is the last time the Bobcats won a district title, and Jacob Byler was the head coach at EHS.
If Erath beats Abbeville, they would be at least tide with Kaplan for the title. Both teams would finish the regular season 3-1.
If Abbeville upsets Erath on Friday, it gives the Bobcats a 2-2 district record and no chance at a district title.
The Bobcats are expected to sit starting quarterback Luke LeBlanc, who has thrown for 2,200 yards this year.
In the fourth quarter against Crowley last week, LeBlanc was tackled and banged his head on the ground.
He did not suffer a concussion, but he is not 100 percent healthy.
Getting his first high school varsity start at quarterback is sophomore Ryan Richard. Richard missed half this season because of a broken collar bone.
Thus far, he has played quarterback twice the last two games because LeBlanc got injured.
The Wildcats would love to spoil Erath’s dream of winning a district title. The Wildcats find themselves on a five-game losing streak and would love to end their season with a winning note.
Pirates stepping out of district
The Kaplan Pirates close out the season at home against Lake Arthur, a Class 2A team, who lost to Notre Dame 42-0 last week.
The Pirates (5-4) are also at No. 17 in the latest Class 3A power point standings. A win on Friday could move them up to No. 16 and lock in a first-round home playoff game.
The North Vermilion Patriots (5-4) travel to Lafayette to play the St. Thomas More Cougars (7-2) in a non-district game. The Cougars, a Class 4A team, are on a three-game winning streak.
The Patriots are at No. 24 in the latest Class 4A power ratings. A win could push the Patriots up to No. 20 in the final power ratings.
St. Thomas More is No. 1 in the Division II Power Ratings.
The Gueydan Bears (4-5) are at No. 14 in Class 1A, and they play 0-9 Elton.
