Big sixth inning powers Lady Eagles to semifinals
The Vermilion Catholic Lady Eagles fans and coaches were waiting for their team to show up in the quarterfinal round of the Division IV playoff.
They finally showed up in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Down 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning, VC scored eight runs and came from behind to win 10-5 against No. 9 seed Ascension Catholic Lady Bulldogs.
VC will have a rematch against district foe Central Catholic Saturday at 11:30 a.m. VC won both games in district play.
The Lady Bulldogs pitching began to struggle in the bottom of the sixth inning. VC's Sadie Boudreaux walked and Kelli Frith and Cady Roberts got hit by a pitch to load the bases. Anne-Catherine Gallet had an RBI walk and tied it 3-3. Ainsley Mallet had another RBI walk that gave VC its first lead, 4-3, of the game.
Roberts scored on a catching error that made it 5-3.
The big blow in the inning was a grand slam home run by pitcher Taylor Abshire that gave VC a 10-3 lead going into top of seventh.
Ascension threatened in the top of the seventh inning scoring two runs.
