Abbeville High begins search for head football coach
Abbeville High is about to begin the search for a new head football coach.
Abbeville High principal Dr. Janet Guerrini sat with head coach Kevin Kern before the Thanksgiving Holidays and told him that she would like the football program to go “in a different direction.”
Kern and Dr. Guerrini agreed to part ways.
Kern did not have any comment about parting ways.
Kern has been the head football coach for three years. He replaced Gary Adkins, who died of cancer while serving as the head coach. Kern took over the head coaching duties when Adkins was sick and could not coach.
In Kern’s last two years, the Wildcats won four games.
In Dr. G’s first year at AHS this year, Abbeville was 1-9.
While the position is not officially opened, Dr. G. said her phone has been ringing from interested coaches. She even had someone visit Abbeville High and meet her in person to say he was interested in the head coaching position.
Dr. G said the teaching position had not been opened, so she can not begin taking applications for the head coaching position.
The new coach hired will be Abbeville High’s eighth head coach since 2004.
The former AHS coaches are Keith Calvert (2004-2005), Robert Toomer (2006-2007), Ward Courville (2008), Larry Breaux (2009-2012), Chris Towery (2013-2014), Gary Adkins (2015-2016) and Kevin Kern (2017-2019).
