Ground game works for Kaplan against Kinder

KAPLAN - The Kaplan Pirates did not do any thing fancy or use trickery to beat Kinder on Friday. They did what they normally do - run the football.
The Pirates have shown when they run for more than 260 yards a game in 2017, they win games.
Against Church Point last week, they rushed for 300 yards and cruised to a victory.
On Friday, the Pirates rushed for 263 yards and cruised to a 28-6 victory over Kinder.
Braylon Romero and Mac Thibeaux combined to 188 yards out of the 263 yards for Kaplan.
Romero ran for 99 yards on 15 totes. He had touchdown runs of 1 and 12 yards.
Thibeaux had 17 carries for 89 yards. he scored on a 24 yard run.
Kaplan led 8-0 on Romero’s first touchdown. Kinder made it a game by scoring a touchdown (8-6) with three minutes left in the first half. But Kaplan came right back with a scoring driving of its own. KHS quarterback Trae Case threw to Logan Roy for an 8-yard touchdown pass. Roy made a fingertip catch in the corner of the end zone with eight seconds left in the first half.
It stayed 16-6 after three quarters.
The Pirates were able to pull away in the fourth quarter by grinding out the clock with their running game.
Kaplan scored two insurance touchdowns in the fourth period.
Passing, Case was 2-for-4 for 25 yards.
Kaplan’s defense did its job by allowing DeRidder to gain only 149 total yards.
Running back Hayden Thomas had 20 carries for 53 yards for Kinder.
The Pirates (2-2) are on the road Friday for a war against No. 1 ranked Notre Dame (4-0).

Vermilion Catholic knocks off Hanson

The Vermilion Catholic Eagles took care of business on Friday by whipping the Hanson Tigers, 17-0.
The victory puts VC at 1-0 in district and now 3-1 overall.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Eagles scored a touchdown to lead 7-0 at half.
The Eagles scored at the 7:13 mark when Andre LeBlanc scored from the 1. LeBlanc had a busy night. He came into the game with less than 15 carries all season. But because Kalix Broussard was sidelined with a knee injury, LeBlanc picked up the slack. He had 27 carries and finished with 97 yards rushing a touchdown.
He also had two receptions for 42 yards.
In the game, VC had 107 yards rushing, compared to Hanson’s 73.
The Eagles were able to put three points on the score board at the 4:32 mark when John Robert Allums nailed a 31-yard field goal.
Ahead 10-0, the Eagles secured the victory when Ethan Lege returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown with 8:02 to play in the game.
VC had 218 yards of total offense, while VC’s defense held Hanson to only 133 yards.
Drew Lege, a freshman, started at quarterback for VC. He completed eight of 25 passes for 64 yards. He also threw two interceptions.
Andrew Marceaux came in and completed two-of-two passes for 47 yards.
Camden Sellers led VC in receiving with five catches for 42 yards.
Others with catches were Ethan (2-18) and Kris Constantine (1-9) .
On Friday, VC (3-1) entertains Centerville (3-0) in a district contest.

Abbeville High has more bad luck than good luck against Breaux Bridge

There is no doubt the Abbeville Wildcats have luck. But on Friday, it was not good luck.
When the Wildcats (1-3) would do something positive in the game against the Breaux Bridge Tigers, bad luck would strike on the very next play.
Abbeville hung with the Tigers for a little while but, in the end, Breaux Bridge won 43-14 in a non-district game.
The Tigers led 13-0 after the first quarter. At the start of the second quarter, Abbeville got on the board to make it a game early in the second period.

Good luck
The Wildcats marched 65 yards in 12 plays to score.
Channing Spears had three big runs for a total of 27 yards on the drive. On third down from the 4. Tavian Menard scooted on the right side and dove across the goal line for a touchdown. Junus Derouen nailed the extra point and Abbeville was right back in the game.

Good luck
On Breaux Bridge’s next series of downs, Abbeville holds them, forcing them to punt. The Wildcats got the punt at their own 25-yard-line. But Breaux Bridge had a penalty on the punt, so AHS head coach Kevin Kern wanted the Tigers to punt it again

Bad luck
So, on the punt, Abbeville miss handled the punt and the ball rolled all the way down to the Tiger 5-yard-line and Breaux Bridge recovers. Three plays later, they score to make it 20-7.

Good luck
Back on the Tiger 30-yard line, Breaux Bridge’s quarterback goes back to pass and big AHS defensive lineman Keiran Shelvin jumps up and deflects the football.

Bad luck
On the deflection by Shelvin, a Breaux Bridge lineman catches the football and runs for a first down.
Also, on the same play, Abbeville’s Jorrin White is lost for the game because of a knee injury trying to tackle the lineman.
Breaux Bridges continues the drive and eventually scores to make it 27-7 with 1:10 to play in the first half.

Bad luck
The Wildcats decide to try and score right before half. Quarterback Chad Celestine throws up a long pass that is intercepted with less than a minute to play in the half. The Tigers marched 50 yards down field and kicked a field goal right before half time to make it 30-7.

Bad luck
To start the second half, Abbeville’s marching down field, mixing it up with runs and throws. But then Celestine is picked off. Five plays later, the Tigers are in the end zone to seal the victory.

Statistics

Tavian Menard had 12 carries for 53 yards and a touchdown.
Tavis Briggs had eight carries for 35 yards and a touchdown.
With each a catch were Omari Akebu-ina (1-14), Dominick Nunez (1-11) and Brayden Williams (1-10).
Akebu-ina led AHS on defense with four solo tackles and five assists. Jesiah Angeles had four solos and three assists. Shelvin finished with two solos and five assists. Nunez had three solos.

Ima Broussard Guidry

LAKE CHARLES – Ima Guidry, born in Grand Chenier on September 22, 1925, to the late Arthur and Alice Broussard, born Henry, passed away on her birthday, September 22, 2017.
She was a member of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary in Kaplan and worked for Meaux’s Drugstore. She loved taking care of everyone, always wanted to make sure everyone ate and drank. Ms. Guidry worked out in her yard, pressure washing her own home and cutting down her own trees well into her 90’s.
Survivors are her children, Glenda Fay Hargrave of Abbeville, Brendal Mire, married to Michael of Kaplan, Craig Hargrave, married to Micky of Cow Island and Tammy Ardoin, married to Joey of Iowa; brother, Hester Broussard of Venice, LA; grandchildren, Brandy Babineaux, Dawn d’Augereau, Monica Miles, Michael D. Mire, Jenny Estay, Kristi Viator and Arielle Ardoin; 13 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husbands, Dudley Hargrave and Loveless Guidry; grandson, Chad James Hargrave; siblings, Wilma Landry, Annie Miller, Aline Perrin, Myrtis Buras, Willie Nell Kelly and Arthur Broussard, Jr.
A Mass of Christian burial will be in Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Kaplan with Father Nicholas Dupre` officiating at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Holy Rosary Cemetery in Kaplan under the direction of Johnson & Brown Funeral Home – Iowa.
Visitation is Monday in Johnson & Brown Funeral Home – Iowa, from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m., with a rosary at 6:30 p.m. and will resume Tuesday in Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Kaplan from 9 a.m. – 10 a.m., with a rosary being recited at 10 a.m.

Craig David

State Police Detectives Arrest a Breaux Bridge Police Officer

BREAUX BRIDGE – Shortly before 5:00 pm on September 21, 2017, Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations/Lafayette Field Office (LSP LFO) arrested 29-year-old Craig David, a police officer with the Breaux Bridge Police Department.
David was charged with carnal knowledge of a juvenile, computer aided solicitation of a minor, and malfeasance in office.
In September of this year, Breaux Bridge Police Chief Rollie Cantu contacted LSP Detectives regarding an alleged sexual misconduct with a 16 year old juvenile by one of his officers. Through their investigation, LSP Detectives were able to determine the alleged misconduct started as early December 2016.
Based on information obtained from the investigation, investigators were able to secure an arrest warrant for David. He was arrested and booked into the St. Martin Parish Detention Center.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.

Joseph Walker, Sr.

ABBEVILLE – Funeral services for Joseph Walker, Sr. “Mr. Blue” is scheduled for 2:00 P.M. Saturday, September 23, 2017 at Faith Hope Christian Fellowship – 407 Duroq Street with burial in Hills-Rudd Cemetery. Bishop B. K. Stevens will officiate the service.
Joseph “Mr. Blue” Walker, Sr., who was a long-time resident of Abbeville that God called home on Sunday, September 17, 2017 at his home.
“Mr. Blue” was a very loving husband; father, brother, uncle, godfather and friend. He was a caring, kindhearted and thoughtful man. He was truly a servant to all and will always be remembered for the wisdom he shared with others.
Joseph Walker, Sr. was baptized at Mt. Triumph Baptist Church at an early age. He later became one of the founders of Faith Hope Christian Fellowship where through the years he served on the Usher Board, Deacon, and Finance Board.
He leaves to mourn yet cherish his memories his lovely wife, Beulah Ann Walker of Abbeville, LA; his sons, Joseph Walker, Jr. of Wisconsin; L. J. Lewis (Dorothy) of Concord, CA; Eugene Lewis (Natalie) of North Carolina; Gregory “Keith” Walker, Carl Lewis, Ronald Darby (Gaynell) all of Abbeville, LA; and Robert Darby (Trudy) of LaPlace, LA; his daughters, Vanessa Gilbert (Joseph), Latasha Richard (Wilson) and Elaine Broussard (Kenneth) all of Abbeville, LA; two sisters, Elnora Walker and Mary Small both of Abbeville, LA; one brother-in-law, Victor Joseph of Abbeville, LA; one maternal aunt, Gracie Parker of Abbeville, LA; four godchildren, Cheryl Joseph, Derick Harris, Evette Antoine of Abbeville, LA; and Moniek Brown of Kileen, TX; a long-time friend, Albert Shelvin, Sr. (Steelhead), and his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, also a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Lloyd Gabriel Richard, Jr.

Lloyd Gabriel Richard, Jr. of Louise, TX passed away on Friday September 15, 2017 at the age of 67 at Harbor Hospice after a lengthy hospitalization.
Lloyd was born in Abbeville, La to Lloyd Sr. and Wilma Daigle (Blanchet) on January 25, 1950. He was the eldest of two children and attended Abbeville High School. He later attended Nashville Auto Diesel College and became a certified diesel mechanic. He worked a number of years in the oil field as a diesel mechanic. He then continued in the oil industry as an 18 wheeler driver. In 1985 he moved his family to Lake Sam Rayburn and opened his own outboard motor repair company. In addition, he transitioned into motorcycle repair and that is when he found his love of motorcycles. In 1988 he moved once again to Louise, TX where he owned, operated, and became the primary cook at Porter Creek Hunting Club. After ten years of cooking he decided it was time for a change he then started his own Pilot Car Service which led him to travel the majority of the United States with his wife. He enjoyed the travel until his health deteriorated.
He never met a stranger and if you were lucky enough to know him you were lucky enough to eat his Cajun cooking. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding motorcycles, drinking, dancing, BS’ing and most importantly watching people eat his food. He loved his family and adored his grandbabies. He was a faithful Catholic and belonged to St. Procopius Catholic Church in Louise, TX.
Lloyd is survived by his loving wife of 47 years Anita Broussard; his 2 girls, Shannan De La Fuente married to Francisco, III and Brandy Victory married to Johnny; his greatest treasures, his 3 grandchildren Gabriela, Francisco, IV and Andrew; his sister, Cynthia Richard Baker; his 2 nephews Cole Baker and Garret Baker married to Tammy and their father, Danny Baker and many other family and friends.
We would like to thank all the staff that cared for him at Methodist Sugarland, Methodist Houston DeBakey Heart Institute Houston and Harbor Hospice.
A celebration of life at RiverFront Banquet Hall will be held Sunday, September 24 from 10-12 with a private burial to follow in St. Mary Magdalena cemetary.
