A special arrangement was placed where Kristy Hebert sat on the school board.

Vermilion Parish School Board looking for person to occupy Hebert’s school board seat until March

Special meeting on Tuesday to name person

The Vermilion Parish Schoool Board is now searching for someone to occupy the school board seat of District H, which consist mostly of Erath, south of Erath, and most of Delcambre.
At Thursday’s meeting, the school board selected a day to have a special meeting to name a temporary replacement for the vacant seat of Kristy Hebert, who was killed in a car accident a week ago Friday. She was buried this past Thursday.
If interested, email Superintendent Tommy Byler at superintedent@vpsb.net.
A special meeting will be held this Tuesday to name the replacement.
Then on March 26, 2022, a special election will be held. The election winner will occupy the seat until the regular election in November of 2022.
At the start of Thursday’s meeting, Superintendent Tommy Byler spoke about the loss of Hebert and what she meant to the parish school system, where she was a teacher before becoming a school board member.
“The pride and passion that Kristy had for her Bobcat family, teachers and students always stood tall,” said Byler. “Every opportunity she had to share the big blue passion nation, she did so. It was also fitting that before she was laid to rest, she was able to travel through the Erath student honor guard on the way to her memorial service.”
Hebert was elected as a school board member in 2019. She represented most of Erath, the Henry area, and just about all of Delcambre. Her son is a sophomore at Erath High School.
“Kristy was a champion for her students and teachers,” said Byler. “She made sure she asked all of the right questions that she needed to be answered.
“I truly cherished her phone calls that always started the same way, ‘I hate to ask so many questions, but I will.’
‘The phone conversations always ended with, ‘I am sorry I had to bother you.’
Byler always told her that her phone calls were never a bother because her questions were always good. After all, she cared.
“She always led with her heart, and we will always be thankful.”

Jessica Lyn Simon Meaux

September 19, 1978 ~ December 19, 2021

ABBEVILLE — On Sunday December 19th, 2021 the world lost Jessica Meaux, a loving mother, wife, daughter, sister and friend.
Her greatest joy in life was being a mother to her daughter, Loren and a wife to her husband, Jeremy. She was the greatest friend to all who knew her and never met a stranger. Her most appreciated qualities were her selflessness, her genuine care for those around her, her time she spent volunteering helping those in need, whether that was by helping victims of recent hurricanes, buying Christmas gifts every year for the less fortunate children, or just giving her prayers for other people’s intentions. She loved her family more than life itself.
She was a shining light in every room she entered. She was the life of every party and it was hard not to instantly fall in love with her thick Cajun accent. She had a talent for making everyone laugh until their stomachs hurt and she made sure to make everyone feel welcomed. She made sure to live in the moment and every day to the fullest. She inspired those around her with her love and friendship, and she will serve as a role model to those who loved her. She was a one-of-a-kind person who will be cherished in the hearts of many.
She was a loving daughter who was always there to help without hesitation. She loved and cared for her nieces and nephews like her own children. She was the first person to call in a time of need. She had strong faith in God even in her final moments, always accepting and trusting in God’s will for her life.
Jessica was an extremely proud business owner of Letters on the Lane Greetings. It was her way to bring joy in other people’s lives by putting a smile on their faces when celebrating accomplishments and milestones. She loved to be known as “the sign lady”. She enjoyed socializing with clients and making connections through her sales representative position with 008 Magazine in Lafayette and surrounding areas. She began her sales career working at the Abbeville Meridional newspaper for almost 20 years. There she met friends she considered family who she would carry with her the rest of her life. Jessica spent a period of time working for La Palmera Spa in Abbeville, where she met a variety of close friends. Her favorite hobby was decorating for and celebrating all holidays with her family, especially Christmas.
She hosted holiday celebrations that will never be forgotten and created traditions her family will carry on for the rest of their days. She was a parishioner of St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church and a member of Our Saviors Church.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church honoring the life of Jessica Lyn Simon Meaux, 43, who died Sunday, December 19, 2021 at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center. She will be laid to rest at St. Paul Cemetery with Reverend Louis J. Richard officiating the services.
Jessica leaves behind her husband, Jeremy Meaux; daughter, Loren Meaux; grandmother, Vernice Long; parents, Ricky and Kathy Simon; her younger sister, Michelle Faul and husband, Rick Faul; her older sister, Shannon McCollum; nephew, Hudson Faul; nieces, Alyssa and Morgan DeRouen; and her Godchildren, Emery Faul, Emily and Tyler DeRouen; and many cousins.
She is preceded in death by her grandparents, Enite and Presley Weekly; and grandfathers, Joseph Paul Simon and Robert Lee Long.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville, 209 S. St. Charles St., on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 from 2:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 P.M; Wednesday, December 22, 2021 from 8:00 A.M. until 10:45 A.M. when the procession will depart for the church.
Condolences may be sent to the family at www.vincentfuneralhome.net. All funeral arrangements are being conducted by Vincent Funeral Home of Abbeville, (337) 893-4661.

Chawanna “Shaune” Turner Alicea

September 25, 1972 ~ December 11, 2021

KAPLAN — A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, December 20, 2021 at St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Catholic Church honoring the life of Chawanna Oranna Turner Alicea. She will be laid to rest at St. Paul Cemetery with Reverend Mark Miley officiating the services.
Chawanna Oranna Turner Alicea was the only child of Bertha and Oran Turner, born on September 25, 1972, in Lafayette, Louisiana. After graduating high school, Shaune attended Southern University in Baton Rouge and the University of Louisiana  in Lafayette. In 1991, Shaune moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, and worked at the at RTC Southern Transit where she later met best friend and husband, Juan Alicea Esteras. In 2008, they moved to New Jersey for a new beginning. Shaune began working at Wakefern Food Corporation in 2012, in the logistics’ department where she found her New Jersey family and later transferred to Asset Protection, working as a Closed Circuit TV Operator. Everyone fell in love with Shaune’s southern accent and spicy flare to tell it like it is. Her laughter was infectious and would fill up a room. Shaune loved to spend time traveling and trying new foods with her mother.
Shaune had a talent of throwing down in the kitchen like her grandmother. Folks, loved her Cajun cooking and encouraged Shaune to sell her signature gumbo. In 2020, Shaune decided it was time to put her dreams first and start a catering business called Cajun Cravings, LLC. The fire was lit under Shaune, as she started networking with community organizations and businesses to get her Cajun cuisine into stores. In late 2020, Shaune was diagnosed with a rare aggressive cancer, but that wouldn’t stop her. She continued to work full time while maintaining weekly treatments and on weekends created new dishes for vendors to sample. Before Shaune’s battle began, she asked her mother to come and they bonded together every step of the way. Shaune beat the first round of cancer and rang her bell at the end of March 2021, CANCER FREE! However, in June 2021, the cancer came back in a different area. Shaune being a private person like her mother, she didn’t share it with many. On the morning of December 11, 2021, at the age of 49, Shaune passed away in her sleep with her mother by her side.
Shaune leaves behind her loving mother, Bertha Turner; her husband, Juan Alicea Esteras; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Shaune is preceded in death by her father, Oran J. Turner; her grandparents, Everett Sr. and Mary Turner; and grandparents, Noah Sr. and Dorothy B. Williams; three aunts, Betty Lou Chambers “Nanny”, Catherine Floyd, Eleanor Marie Walker; four uncles, Louise Hebert, Noah Williams, Jr., Joseph Navarre Williams, and Willie J. Williams. Shaune is no longer in pain and her body is healed. If you listen silently, you can hear Shaune’s laughter and see her smiling.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Catholic Church, 910 N. Frederick Ave., on Monday, December 20, 2021 from 9:00 AM until the time of the services at 10:00 AM with a repass being held from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM.
