Omicron cases continue to dominate spread in Louisiana

Proportion of Omicron in state increases to 90.2% of all COVID-19 cases

BATON ROUGE — The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) estimates the proportion of Omicron cases in our state has increased from 88.5% to 90.2% for the week ending January 1.*
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates the proportion of Omicron in HHS Region 6 (which includes Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas) is 98.2%. Furthermore, 63 of Louisiana’s 64 parishes (98.4%) are at the 2 highest levels of community transmission; one remains unclassified due to low test volume. This is an increase from last week's 95%.
*NOTE: LDH’s estimate for the Omicron proportion is preliminary and subject to change as more sequencing data are reported.

LDH Guidance
COVID-19 cases and emergency department visits are at an all-time high throughout Louisiana, and hospitalizations are high. These increases are attributable to the Omicron variant, which spreads faster than other variants and is now the dominant strain in our state.
LDH recommends getting vaccinated and boosted if eligible, masking indoors as well as outside when distancing is not possible, and limiting your exposure to those not in your household.
To learn about vaccination sites near you, call Louisiana's vaccine hotline at 855-453-0774. For a list of locations near you, visit https://ldh.la.gov/covidvaccine or text your ZIP code to GETVAX (438829) in English or VACUNA (822862) in Spanish.

Vermilion Parish School System keeping eye on COVID

Mask mandate on school bus rides only

With the increase of COVID over the last two weeks, Vermilion Parish school systems took a step back to see if they needed to make any changes to their COVID policies.
Superintendent Tommy Byler informed students and parents this past weekend that there would be no school this past Monday, but teachers and staff had to report.
Catholic schools in the parish also did not have school on Monday.
After meeting with teachers, Byler did not make any drastic changes to the COVID policies.
He reminded students to wear masks when riding a school bus. He also recommended that students, staff, and teachers wear masks in school. Byler, however, did not make it mandatory to wear masks.
He said masks are “highly recommended indoors but not mandated.”
Quarantining will follow the new CDC guidelines, he stated.
“Thank you to all stakeholders who adjusted to our change. We are all in this together, and in the end, we all want what is best for our students.
“We got this Vermilion. Let’s all be great together.

I have over 30 years of leadership experience in healthcare in the realms of safety, budgeting, strategic planning, performance improvement, and supply chain services.
Being elected as your school board representative would afford me the opportunity to further serve Vermilion Parish at large and specifically District B and our schools. I am committed to continuing to provide exemplary educational opportunities for our youth who are the future of our community. I will serve you, my fellow citizens, with unwavering dedication, professionalism, compassion, and understanding. I promise to listen to your concerns with an open mind and will work diligently to find reasonable solutions that best serve the stakeholders of District B and Vermilion Parish, as we all want the highest quality of education for our kids. My 30 years of proven successful leadership in the healthcare industry will be an asset if I am fortunate enough to be afforded the opportunity to undertake this new endeavor as your school board representative.
This community is my home. Monica and I have raised our children here. Our girls were guided and taught in the schools in our community, and Monica and I know that we owe gratitude to these schools and our school system for the exemplary education our daughters were given. We want the same for our grandchildren who will one day walk the halls of the same schools our children were so lucky to attend, and I want to be a part of ensuring the tradition of excellence continues in our schools for my grandchildren and all the children of our community.
