Abbeville city hall sends citizen $2,500 bill after city hires contractor to clean part of her yard

The city of Abbeville is getting tougher about enforcing ordinances regarding abandoned houses, overgrown yards, and junk-inoperable vehicles in yards.
Just ask long-time Abbeville resident Sandra Goodman, 71, about how tough the city is getting on cleaning up Abbeville.
Last month, she received a bill from the city that was $2,500.  
The bill was divided into two parts. The largest amount, $1,675, was for the contractor the city hired to clean her yard.
The other part, $837, is for the city’s administrator fee.

Truck used to steal ATM from Gueydan store

GUEYDAN — According to Vermilion Parish Sheriff Mike Couvillon, at approximately 2:25 a.m. on May 1, patrol deputies were dispatched to Loignon’s Grocery in Gueydan, due to someone crashing into the store and stealing the ATM.
Upon arrival, deputies were also notified that a damaged Dodge pickup truck was observed in a field off Elliot Road, Gueydan. Upon locating the vehicle, the ATM was observed broken into in the bed of the truck, along with building material from the store; it was also determined that the vehicle had recently been stolen.

Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office investigating after body is found in canal

According to Vermilion Parish Sheriff Mike Couvillon, on Friday April 26, 2024, at approximately 10 a.m., a body was located floating in a canal off of West Liberty Farm Road, south of Kaplan by a local farmer
Upon arrival of patrol and detectives, a male subject was located floating in a canal. The body was recovered and sent to Parish Forensics for autopsy and manner of death.
Detectives are in the process of trying to identify the individual.

Voters in Vermilion Parish reject two renewals on Saturday; three others approved

Voters in Vermilion Parish rejected two renewals on Saturday’s ballot, while three others passed.
A parish-wide proposition, a 3.26 mill renewal, failed with 52% (1,106) voting against it. Support for the proposition finished with 48% (1,003 votes). The renewal would have collected an estimated $1,106,600 for an entire year for a period of 10 years to maintain public roads and highways in the parish.

Abbeville's Luther Winch: Cajun Cowboy turns into a Texas Rancher

The Abbeville Meridional sat with Abbeville native Luther Winch to learn about his ranch and cattle business in Montgomery, Texas (50 miles northwest of Houston).
Winch, 61, has been married to Therese Broussard Winch since 1990, and they have two sons. Luther L Winch, IV. “Luke” is 28 years old and helps manage the ranch businesses. Rome Benjamin Winch is 25 years old. The Winches own and operate WINCH Ranch.
