Gueydan votes to raise sewerage rates, community center rental fee

GUEYDAN — The residents of Gueydan will pay more for sewerage and to rent the town’s 9,000-square-foot community center.
At Tuesday night’s monthly city council meeting, the council approved an increase in the sewerage rates from $18 monthly to $22.50 for residents and $31.25 for businesses.
The motion passed 5-0 with no residence from the audience.
However, increasing the rental cost of the community center created a debate between the Gueydan residents and the board members.

Abbeville Fire Department teams up with State Farm, National Fire Protection Association to promote importance of working smoke alarms

The Abbeville Fire Department is teaming up with State Farm® and the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) to promote Fire Prevention Week™, October 6-12, and this year’s theme, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you.™,” which aims to better educate the public about the critical importance of working smoke alarms.
According to NFPA, working smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a fire by more than half (54 percent).

Prestigious honor: Coast Guard presents LSU AgCenter agents Bui, Shirley with Meritorious Public Service Award

Rarely does the U.S. Coast Guard present its Meritorious Public Service Award, the branch’s second-highest award given to a civilian.
However, this moment occurred twice Wednesday morning in Vermilion Parish when the Coast Guard honored LSU AgCenter Agents Mark Shirley and Thu Bui. The presentation took place at the LSU Agricultural Extension Office in Abbeville, with family, friends and Coast Guard members in attendance.
“We’re all here to honor the work Mark Shirley and Thu Bui have done for the past 40-plus years,” Harry March said of the pair’s combined experience.

Erath police arrest man for bank fraud

ERATH — Erath Police Department arrested Randy Landry of New Iberia after a two-month investigation.
He was charged with felony bank fraud, monetary instrument abuse, and access device fraud.
Landry was arrested in Erath and his bond for the three charges was set at $22,500.
However, he was no longer in the parish jail the next day. The investigation into Landry began on July 16, 2024, after he allegedly used a stolen checking account number to create new checks with his name and the stolen checking account number on them.
