Abbeville man sentenced for death of 3-month old baby

Shane Vincent has been sentenced for the 2012 death of three-month-old Jayla Broussard.
Judge Ed Broussard sentenced Vincent on May 25 to seven years at hard labor.
Vincent entered a plea agreement with the state.
Vincent originally faced a second-degree murder charge, as well as obstruction of justice, in connection to Broussard’s death in November of 2012. He pleaded not guilty to those charges. Vincent withdrew that plea and entered a plea of no contest to the amended charge of manslaughter. The state dismissed the two counts to obstruction to justice.

Planters Rice, the old Riviana Rice Mill, is laying off some of its work force.

Planters Rice Mill in Abbeville will be reducing its work force

In a press release, Planters Rice Mill in Abbeville announced it will reduce its workforce and milling capacity due to changing economic conditions and lack of rough rice available.
On Thursday, Planters Rice Mill, LLC (Planters), located at 403 S. Washington Street, announced it will significantly reduce its workforce on or before June 9, 2017.
According to officials at Planters, the company will continue to operate the rice dryer and take in rough rice for the foreseeable future.

Ward Courville

Courville making move to Abbeville High

Abbeville High School’s front office is taking shape with the hiring of a new assistant principal.
On Tuesday, new Abbeville High principal Lyndell Theriot announced that Ward Courville will be transferring to Abbeville High to be the assistant principal.
Courville has been the assistant principal at Kaplan High School. Prior to that, he taught and coached at Abbeville High School for a few years.

North Vermilion’s Byler finalist for state Principal of the Year

BATON ROUGE — The Louisiana Department of Education today announced the finalists for the 2018 Teacher and Principal of the Year awards.
North Vermilion High
School’s Tommy Byler is among the three finalists for High School Principal of the Year.
“Just being named a semifinalists was a big deal,” Byler said Tuesday morning. “To be recognized as a finalist is a really humbling experience.”

2017 Erath Fourth of July Royalty

The 2017 Erath 4th of July Celebration royalty were crowned last weekend during their annual pageant held at the Erath Community Building. Reigning for 2017 are (left to right): Jr. Miss 4th of July Carlee LeBlanc, Teen Miss 4th of July Katelyn Bedwell, Miss Erath Fourth of July E'Llise Marie Trosclair, Young Miss 4th of July Jaylee LeDoux, and Little Miss 4th of July Rylann Viator. The Baby Pageant will be held on June 24 and registration for that pageant is still open.
