Abbeville’s budget in good shape

When dealing with a government budget, there are going to be ups-and-downs during the course of the year.
For the City of Abbeville, the first quarter of 2018 went mostly on the up side of things.
Members of the Abbeville City Council heard a positive report on finances for the first three months of the year. Steven Moosa of Darnal, Sikes, Gardes & Frederick made the presentation during a finance committee meeting last Tuesday.
“Overall there is nothing that stands out in the first quarter that is unusual or unexpected,” Moosa said. “It was very positive.”

Vermilion Parish Police Jury buys $700,000 shredder to preserve the life of the parish landfill

This past week, the mean-green “Terminator” arrived at the Vermilion Parish Solid Waste Department (the landfill).
The terminator is a portable shredder, and it is called the terminator because it terminates anything that is dropped into it.
The Police Jury purchased the terminator for $700,000 and it will extend the life of the landfill by 10 to 15 years.
The landfill, located north of Abbeville, is 40-plus years old and was looking at filling up and shutting down over the next 10 years.

FEMA grant brings new truck to LeBlanc

LEBLANC — Yes, it may make other departments envious, but for the members of the LeBlanc Volunteer Fire Department, their new service rescue truck is more than just a sweet, new ride.
And for the people the department serves, the truck may just make a life-saving difference.
LeBlanc Fire Chief Ronald Broussard unveiled the new truck this week. Broussard said a grant from FEMA covered a majority of the $262,000 price tag. The department had to cover a five-percent match for the grant.
