On Saturday, Oct. 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration will give the public the 16th opportunity in seven years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.

The Vermilion Parish School Board could collect less than $1 million from 16 Section Land, which could be a first.
The school district owns tracks of land in the parish known as 16 Section Land. The tracks are spread throughout the parish from White Lake area, to along the coastline to the North Vermilion area.
The good thing about the land is that when oil and gas companies drill and hit a well, the school district collects money from the oil and gas revenues.
Vermilion Parish is spending money because the parish had a 14 percent increase in sales tax collections from a year ago.
Last year in August the parish collected $2.7 million in sales tax. This past August it jumped to $3.1 million.
Four communities have seen an upswing in sales tax collections for the month of August.
The Village of Maurice witnessed an increase of 26 percent for the month of August. The Village collected $61,000 this August, which is $13,000 more than a year ago.
