Kaplan Council awards walking trail project
KAPLAN — The construction of the walking trail was given the approval to begin during the regular Kaplan city council meeting last Tuesday.
City engineer Brett Bayard informed the council that six contractors were sent bids requesting quotes for the bid in February. However, no quotes were submitted.
While trying to continue to reach out to get bids, they were contacted by Hardee Lumber Company of Kaplan who expressed interest in bidding. Their bid price came it at $138,374, approximately $2,000 more than the original budget.
They were awarded the contract.
The City of Kaplan had originally applied for $90,278 of the total $136,837 project (66%) with the Louisiana Office of State Parks. Of the remaining $46,559 in local match, $20,000 would come from Abrom Kaplan Hospital and $25,423 from the City of Kaplan. However, due to budget cuts, the state awarded $85,573, which was less than the requested amount. This makes the city’s portion increase by $10,000.
The project start date was unknown at the time of the meeting.
“Not quite sure on start date because it typically takes 30 days to get the bond and insurance, then we give them another 30 days to get all their material together,” said Bayard. “And without having the paperwork in front of me to give an exact amount of time the project will take, I’m going to venture a guess that it should take a couple of months, weather permitting.”
In other measures, the council approved :
•The re-appointment of Darsen Cormier to serve on the Kaplan Civil Service Board for a five year term.
•The resignation of Charlie Beiza from the wastewater treatment plant.
•The termination of Nathan Campbell from the Streets Department.
•The appointment of Christine Trahan to serve on the Vermilion Economic Development Alliance Board for a five year period.
Before adjourning, board members tabled a one time 5% pay increase for current city employees and a 5% pay increase for certifications of Certified Municipal Clerk and Master Municipal Clerk obtained by the City Clerk/Treasurer Christine Trahan. It was decided to introduce it to the Finance Committee for discussion and approval before brnging it back to council for voting it in.
