North Vermilion Patriots look to keep up outstanding defensive play vs. Wildcats

MAURICE — Defense was the key for the North Vermilion Patriots getting their first win of the season this past Friday, a 23-15, three-overtime thriller at Erath.
The Patriots must keep up that defensive effort this week if they’re going to improve to 2-1 with a win over Abbeville, head coach Joe Heintz said.
“Defensively, I thought we played really well,” Heintz said. “To hold them to 7 points in regulation and to do that on a couple of short fields, I thought that was huge. I thought defense won us the game Friday night.”

Abbeville sets sights on stopping physical North Vermilion team

The Abbeville Wildcats played the kind of game they wanted to play against a talented Central Catholic football squad this past Thursday, and it all started up front for the Wildcats.
“I thought we were much more aggressive on the offensive line this week than we were in week 1,” AHS head coach Roderick Moy said. “This week I thought was more indicative of who we want to be, and I thought the guys up front really went out and did a good job.
“That’s the brand of ball that we want to play, and until somebody makes us do something different, that’s what it’s going to be.”

Kaplan whips Berwick

KAPLAN — On a night that saw a nearly two-hour lightning delay in the third quarter, the Kaplan High Pirates dominated Berwick with a 38-19 win to improve to 2-0 on the young season.
The score could easily have been much more lopsided had the game not been canceled with just over three minutes to go in the third quarter of Thursday’s game.

Abbeville plays smash-mouth football in win

After two games, the Abbeville Wildcats have shown nothing fancy with their offense. They play smash-mouth football. Hand the ball off and run it down the middle.
With a host of players carrying the football, the Wildcats got their first win of 2023, whipping Central Catholic of Morgan City 20-7. They finished with more than 200 yards rushing.
The Wildcats play host to North Vermilion next Friday.
Abbeville head coach Roderick Moy said he cannot play smash-mouth football three weeks in a row.

What a night for VC QB Jonathan Dartez

Vermilion Catholic junior quarterback Jonathan Dartez seems to be like a bottle of wine and gets better with time.
Playing in what could be his 26th high school football game, Dartez did something he has never done thus far.
In the 30-28 win over Ascension Episcopal on Friday, Dartez ran for an amazing 359 yards on 31 carries and scored three touchdowns.
He also completed six of eight passes for 52 yards and threw one interception.
In one game, Dartez accumulated 411 yards of offense.
