Big plays lift Vikings past North Vermilion

LEROY — Northside High used an explosive offense to claim a 42-15 win at North Vermilion on Friday, finishing with seven plays of greater than 20 yards and another 11 plays gaining 10 yards or more.
“We knew coming into it that they were a big-play team on offense,” North Vermilion coach Joe Heintz said. “We felt like if we had to make them drive, it was going to be hard for them. They did it a couple of times, but they’re a big-play team.”

VC crushes Centerville, 57-14

Vermilion Catholic built a 50-8 first-half lead on the way to a 57-14 homecoming win over Centerville on Friday.
The Screaming Eagles remained unbeaten at 8-0 overall and 4-0 in District 7-A.
VC led 28-0 after one quarter after Jonathan Dartez and Tyjh Williams each scored two touchdowns.
Dartez opened the scoring with a two-yard TD run, then scored on a 25-yard pass from William Simon.
Williams then added touchdown runs covering 22 and 49 yards to build the lead to 28-0, with Dane Richoux kicking all four point-after touchdowns.

Kaplan gets big win over St. Martinville in front of homecoming crowd

Leading up to the St. Martinville contest, Kaplan fans were questioning why they were playing St. Martinville for homecoming.
However, Kaplan head coach Cory Brodie knew his team always gets motivated to play a homecoming game, which was just what the Pirates needed to battle the St. Martinville Tigers this past Friday.
In an entertaining game for the homecoming crowd, the Pirates pulled off a minor upset, 36-32.

The North Vermilion Patriots are 29th in the latest unofficial power rankings from the LHSAA, and remains in contention for a spot in the non-select Division IV playoffs. The top 28 teams in each division earn a spot in the non-select playoffs.

Patriots treating this week like playoff game

LEROY — This week’s home game against Northside may not be a must-win contest for the North Vermilion High football team, but the Patriots are treating it that way.
North Vermilion is 2-5 on the year but all but one of its losses has been by 7 points or less. The Patriots are 29th in the current, unofficial power points in non-select Division II, meaning they need to make up one spot by season’s end to earn a playoff bid for the second straight year.

VC preparing for homecoming

Vermilion Catholic will look to get off to a fast start again this week when the Screaming Eagles take on Centerville for homecoming on Friday.
The Eagles scored on all six of their first-half possessions in a 42-8 road win over Jeanerette this past week. That included a one-play scoring possession and two two-play drives.
The defense did its part, pitching a shutout until the final series of the game, when JHS scored against VC backups as time ran out in the second half.
