Peter Russo Trophy staying in Kaplan

The Peter Russo Memorial Trophy still means a lot to the Kaplan Pirates, despite it being in Kaplan since 2005.
The trophy is given to the winner of the Abbeville/Kaplan game. For the last 14 years, it has been in the Kaplan High trophy case by the gym where everyone can view it. When it first arrived in 2005, the current Kaplan seniors were only four years old and Facebook was only a baby.

North Vermilion Patriots playing for school’s first Class 4A district title

The North Vermilion Patriots have only been in Class 4A for this season and already they are making lots of noise.
In their first season in Class 4A, the Patriots are right where they want to be with only two games remaining. They have a 5-3 record and have a chance to finish with a winning record if they can get a win over Eunice on Friday or St. Thomas More in the final week.

Good things happening in Gueyda: Bears on 3-game winning streak

BASILE - There is a whole lot of smiling going on at Gueydan High School this week.
Everyone is smiling because the Gueydan Bears beat Grand Lake 29-26 last week in district action and are on a three-game winning streak.
With the win from ast week, the Bears have locked up a playoff bid. They are now playing for a chance to play at home in the first round.
Grand Lake came into Gueydan with a 5-2 overall record and a 2-2 district record. They left Gueydan with third district loss and regular-season loss.

Crowley, Erath each in need of a victory

ERATH – With just two weeks remaining in the regular season, prep football teams across the state are jockeying for position in the upcoming playoffs.
That is exactly the case for the Crowley Gents and the Erath Bobcats, who square off Friday at Bobcat Stadium (7 p.m.).
For the Gents (5-3, 1-1), it’s a chance to possibly move up a spot or two from where they sit now in the power ratings (No. 20).
It’s just as big for the Bobcats (3-5, 1-1) , who are currently on the bubble for the playoffs at No. 30.

Vermilion Catholic on the road to play Covenant

The Vermilion Catholic Eagles (7-1 overall, 3-0 in district) will try to keep their dream of winning a district title still alive.
The Eagles travel to Houma to play Covenant Christian Academy (2-4, 0-3) in a district game.
Covenant Christian likes to run the football.
They average 131 yards on the ground and only 13 yards in the air.
Their running back has 259 yards rushing. Connor Mathern has carried the pigskin 53 times for 259 yards. In Covenant’s 27-0 win over St. John in Week 3, the sophomore rushed for 100 yards.
