Petry’s walk-off double lifts Pirates to 8-7 win over David Thibodaux

KAPLAN — Carter Petry doubled in Aiden Gaspard in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Kaplan High to a dramatic 8-7 walk-off win over David Thibodaux STEM Magnet Academy on Monday.
David Thibodaux led 6-0 after scoring five runs in the top of the third inning, but the Pirates scored three runs in the third and three in the fourth, trailing 7-6 after the Bulldogs had tacked on a run in the top of the fourth inning.
But Kaplan scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 7-all on a bases-loaded, two out walk to Landon Cheek, forcing in Sabe David. The Pirates opened the inning with two hit batters and two fielder’s choices before Caden Campisi drew a walk to load the bases and Cheek walked to bring in the tying run.
In the top of the seventh, winning pitcher Luke Harrington set the Bulldogs down in order on a ground out, a strikeout and a dropped third strike with a throw to first for the out.
Gaspard singled to right field with one out in the bottom of the seventh, then stole second base, scoring when Petry doubled to right field.
The Pirates scored three runs with two out in the bottom of the third. David walked and Hayes Mire was hit by a pitch, and Campisi hit an RBI single to center to bring in the first run. Cheek followed with a double to left to plate two more runs.
Kaplan’s three-run fourth inning also came with two outs. Mason Duhon walked to open the inning and went to third on Petry’s double to center. A dropped third strike resulted in a throw to first, allowing Duhon to score. Remi Broussard singled to left for an RBI and went to second on the throw home. Broussard went to third on a passed ball, and courtesy runner Brett Guidry scored on another passed ball.
Petry went 2-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run, and Cheek doubled, walked and drove in three runs to pace the Pirates at the plate.
David had a walk, an RBI and two runs; Broussard had a hit with an RBI. Mire had a hit, a walk and scored a run. Campisi added a single, a walk, an RBI and a run. Coy Terro walked twice, Duhon walked and scored a run and Gaspard had a hit and a run.
Harrington got the win after pitching 3 1/3 shutout innings, surrendering no hits and one walk while striking out four. Grant Stelly started for Kaplan, allowing five runs on seven hits with two walks and one strikeout in 3 2/3 innings.
David Thibodaux scored five runs in the top of the third on an error that brought in two runs and a double by Ben Chorowicki that plated three more runs.
Six players pitched for the Bulldogs.
Chorowicki went 2-for-4 with a double, four RBIs and a run to lead David Thibodaux at the plate. Carter Girouard also doubled and scored a run and Reed Harvison had an RBI.
