Cheryl “NeNe” Joseph

ABBEVILLE – Funeral services for Cheryl “NeNe” Joseph is scheduled for 2:00 P.M. Saturday, November 11, 2017 at St. Mary Congregational Church – 213 S. Louisiana Avenue. Burial will be in Pleasant Green Cemetery on Prairie Street. Elder Ronald Darby will officiate the service.
Cheryl “NeNe” Joseph (53), a long time resident of Abbeville passed away on Sunday, October 29, 2017 at her residence. She was a very loving and caring woman who loved her family dearly and will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her father, Victor Joseph, Jr. Four children, Pamela Joseph, Dominique Rideaux (Walter), Desiree Joseph and Shyla Joseph all of Abbeville, LA; three grandsons, Trevion Joseph, Kevondrick Joseph and Walter Rideaux IV, all of Abbeville, LA; two granddaughters, Alyssa Rideaux and Malijah Brailey, both of Abbeville, LA; three brothers, Harold Antoine Jr., Detrick Hawthorne of Abbeville, LA; and Christopher Hawthorne of Kileen, TX; four sisters, Barbara Joseph of Houston, TX; Linda Landry (Chris), and Catherine Landry (Rev. Wayne) of Abbeville, LA; and Monick Brown of Kileen, TX; two god-children, Chris Darensburg and Javon Joseph of Abbeville, LA; two aunts, Beulah Ann Walker (a godmother) and Willie Mae of Abbeville, LA; three uncles, Lennis Antoine of San Francisco, CA; Harris Antoine and Charles Broussard of Abbeville, LA; one great-aunt, Murley Douglas of Abbeville, LA; and a dear friend, Ada Minick of Abbeville, LA.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Stella Antoine; a son, Antonio Joseph; paternal grandmother, Janie Mae Perro; paternal grandfather, Victor Joseph, Sr.; maternal grandmother, Ada Antoine; maternal grandfather, Zephrone Antoine; and several uncles, aunts, and a god-father.
Visitation is scheduled for Saturday, November 11, 2017 at the church (St. Mary Congregational) from 8:00 A.M. until time of service.

Gueydan High celebrated its “A” score during a rally Tuesday afternoon.

Gueydan now ‘A’ school

Gueydan High School can boast it is now an A school based on the state’s performance scores released on Tuesday.
The state has a list of scores for combination high schools, which are high schools and middle schools together.
Gueydan High School, which is a middle school and high school, had a performance score of 106.1 and an A grade. It is now ranked as the No. 14th best combination pulic school in the state.
Gueydan High moved up 10 performance points from a year ago.
Gueydan Principal Brandy Broussard is proud of the school and community.
“The faculty, staff, students, administration and community have all played a pivotal role in the academic growth that Gueydan High School has attained,” said Broussard. “Through hard work and a positive environment our students have and will continue to achieve academic excellence. The faculty and staff work daily at increasing rigor and challenging students in and out of the classroom. We are proud to join the ranks of other top schools in the state as we continue to foster and develop strong community leaders. Go Bears!”
Delcambre High is the 8th ranked combination school in the state. The school is an A school with a score of 113.1.

Fayda Marie Landry Maturin

April 7, 1940 ~ November 6, 2017

ABBEVILLE — A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, November 9, 2017 at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church honoring the life of Fayda Marie Landry Maturin, 77, who died Monday, November 6, 2017. She will be laid to rest at St. Paul Cemetery with Father Michael Richard officiating the services.
Ms. Fayda never met a stranger. She was known as “Gammy” not only to her only grandchild, Chloe, but to many others as well. She was a devoted Catholic who loved to pray the rosary and spent much time at holy hour. Fayda was a large part of the St. Mary Magdalen community and will be sadly missed.
Fayda is survived by her son, Troy James Maturin and his wife the former Kimberly Lavergne of Wright; granddaughter, Chloe Maturin of Wright; brother, Leroy Joseph Landry and his wife Edna Mae of New Iberia.
She was preceded in death by her father, Cleus Landry; and mother, Lilly Duhon Landry.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville, 209 S. St. Charles St., on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 from 5:00 PM until 10:00 PM with a rosary being prayed at 7:00 PM; Thursday, November 9, 2017 from 8:00 AM until 10:45 AM when the procession will depart for the church.

John Dalton Sellers

ABBEVILLE – Funeral Services for Mr. John Dalton Sellers, 91, will be held at 12:00PM on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at David Funeral Chapel of Abbeville.    Interment will follow at St. Paul Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at David Funeral Home of Abbeville on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 from 10:00AM until the time of the services.
A native and resident of Abbeville, Mr. Sellers died at 2:07AM on Monday, November 6, 2017 at his residence.  He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII and retired from Freeport Sulphur Co. after over 30 years of service.  He also enjoyed fishing.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary L’Berta Luquette Sellers of Abbeville; a brother, Paul E. Sellers of Lafayette; numerous nieces, nephews,and a special friend of the family, Jackie Theall.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leoscar and Burnadet Luquette Sellers; and a sister, Rena S. Hebert.
Serving as pallbearers will be members of his family.

Robert “Robo” Nicholas

ERATH – A celebration of the Life of Robert “Robo” Wayne Nicholas will be held Tuesday November 7, 2017 from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM with a Rosary recited at 6:00 PM at David Funeral Home of Erath.
Robo, a native of Raceland and a resident of Erath, lost his short battle with lung cancer after suffering pneumonia, at the age of 61.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Cynthia “Cindy” Nicholas; three daughters Michele and her husband Marcus Taylor, Amy and her husband Chris Journet, and Kayla and her husband Gerald Case; his grandchildren Blair, Bailey, and Jeremiah Landry, Taylor Nicholas, Marcus Jr. and Braxton Taylor, Kayde and Koen Nicholas, and Ryley Case. He is also survived by numerous nieces and a nephew.
Robo was preceded in death by his son Jimmy “Jimbo” Nicholas, his parents Jim and Margie Nicholas; two brothers Jimmy Nicholas and Johnny Nichols; and one sister Carol Jean Nicholas.

Abbeville—Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville honoring the life of Troy Mathew Thomas, 48, who died Sunday, November 5, 2017 at his residence. He will be laid to rest at St. Paul Cemetery with Pastor Anthony Rice officiating the services. Pallbearers will be Allen Picard, Martin LeBlanc, Wayne Elliot, Charles Freeman and Charles Fox.
Troy is survived by his mother, Johnnie Busick; son, Christian Jones; three daughters, Stephanie Thomas, Hailey Thomas and Hannah Jones; grandchildren, Cade Thomas, Bianca Blount, Kensie Roche, Avery Jones, Ansley Castille, Blakestin Jones; and sister, Kathy Thomas Breaux.
He was preceded in death by his father, Danny Thomas; brother, Jude Thomas; step-father, Fred Busick; maternal grandparents, Yolande and Martin Foster; and paternal grandparents, Rena and Louis Thomas.

Pecan Island – A mass of Christian Burial for Irona Marie Stevens Lege, known to those who love her as “Squeaky”, will be held at 12 PM on Wednesday, November 8, 2017, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pecan Island. Interment will follow at the cemetery adjacent to the church.
Visitation will be held at David Funeral Home in Abbeville, LA on Tuesday, November 7, 2017, from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM, with a recitation of the Rosary at 7:00 PM. Visitation will also be available on Wednesday morning at the Sacred Heart Church Hall in Pecan Island from 10:00 AM until the funeral begins at 12:00 PM.
A native of Opelousas, and a resident of Pecan Island, Squeaky was called home by her Heavenly Father on Saturday evening at the age of 61.
She was a homemaker for many years before becoming a hairdresser and hair color educator for Matrix International, which she continued to do for over 20 years. She has since worked at the Lafayette Parish Animal Shelter and the Desormeaux Women’s Foundation. She was a nurturing and loving mother who will be missed by many. A classy woman with a pretty smile who will be remembered for her love of games and friendly competition as much as for her fiery personality and love of family.
She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Jerry Lege, Sr. of Pecan Island, sons Jerry Lege, Jr. and Steven Lege, and daughter, Tana Lege Pittman, as well as her 11 grandchildren and 9 siblings.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elwood C. Stevens, Sr. of Plaquemine, LA and Eloise Gregory Stevens Arceneaux of Natchez, Mississippi.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Lege, Jr., Steven Lege, Nathan Lege, Scott Pittman, Christian Pittman, and Joshua Bertrand.

Four Vermilion Parish teams in high school football playoffs

Four Vermilion Parish football teams landed a spot in the high school playoffs, announced Sunday by the LHSAA.
Two out of the four teams will be playing home, while the other two are on the road.
The Vermilion Catholic Eagles, after beating Central Catholic on Friday, jumped back up to the No. 1 seed in Division IV and will be home.
No. 1 seed VC will entertrain No. 16 seed St. Martin Episcopal, who is the last seed in Dvision IV.
The winner of that game plays No. 9 seed Ouachita Christian/No. 8 seed Sacred Heart winner.
There is a good chance VC could meet up with No. 5 Central Catholic or No.4 seed Lafayette Christian in the semifinal game.
The finals are Dec. 7 in the Superdome.

In Class 3A

The Kaplan Pirates are the No. 5 seed and will play No. 28 seed KIPP Renaisannance at home.
The winner of that game will play the winner of No. 12 Iota/No. 21 seed Patterson winner.
The North Vermilion Patriots have dropped in the power point rankings the last two weeks because of two loses. They ended up No. 25 seed and will travel to meet No. 8 Richwood.
The winner of that game will play the winner of No. 9 Loranger/No. 24 Washington-Marion winner.
No. 11 Berwick will entertain No. 22 seed Eunice.
The No. 1 seed in Class 3A is Sterlington,who meets No. 32 Baker.

Class A

The No. 23 seed Gueydan Bears are headed to west central Louisiana to play No. 10 Montgomery.
The winner of that game will play the winner of the No.7 Basile/No. 26 seed Slaughter Community Charter game in the second round.
No. 1 seed West St John drew a bye in the first round.
No. 19 Centerville will travel to play No.14 Merryville.

Large crowd attends Giant Omelette Celebration, including bacon and egg

The weather was perfect and it was evident about how many people attended the 33rd Giant Omelette Celebration in Abbeville this weekend.
The celebration concluded with the cooking of 5,033 eggs in front of a couple of thousand who sat and watched as the eggs were cooked.
Mt. Carmel student Abigail Listi presented the new egg named, Eggsindillen Eggbert to the chevaliers before they began cooking.
In that crowd of people were two unique individuals who stood out.
Caitlin Robinson and Gilian Van Bree decided to drive from Hammond to attend the Giant Omelette Celebration and wore an egg and bacon costume.
Robinson was the bacon and Bree was an egg.
Their costumes caught the eye of Chevaliers Angelle Broussard and Laurie Hulin. The two went up to the girls and insisted they take a picture with them.
“These were our Halloween costumes so, we decided to wear them,” said Bree. “It fit the occasion.”
The two Southeastern University students were two of many people who travelled to Abbeville from out of town.
Brian Clemens of Lake Charles brought his family to watch as the eggs are cooked.
“This is a neat thing to see,” said Clemens. “We enjoy coming watch and then eat the eggs.”
The two day celebration began Sunday at 9 a.m. with an social mass at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church.
The procession of the chefs and eggs walked through downtown at 1 p.m. with the preparation starting around 1:20.
By 3 p.m. the crowd was given cooked cooks with crawfish and seasoning.
“This is worth the wait,”said Clemens as he ate the eggs.
