Vermilion Parish Teachers of the year announced

NV’s Alleman, Herod’s Conca, Erath Middle’s Suire earn honors

During the same week students went through the interview process for their top yearly accolades, the Vermilion Parish School System announced the honorees who help make those students so successful.
Earning recognition as Vermilion Parish Teachers of the Year are Herod Elementary School’s Darbi Conca, Erath Middle School’s Amy Suire and North Vermilion High School’s Jacqueline Alleman.
Conca is in her third year as a third-grade teacher at Herod Elementary in Abbeville.
“It’s a great honor to have been chosen for this award,” Conca said. “I am so blessed to work for the Vermilion Parish School Board because of the ongoing support that they provide to their teachers as well as having so many other wonderful educators to collaborate with.
“I know that I wouldn’t have been considered for this award if I didn’t have the most amazing students who rise to my high expectations every day.”
Conca said she became a teacher to help make a positive impact in her students’ lives. Herod Principal Lysonia Robertson said that is evident in the work Conca puts in each day.
“She is an intelligent and hard working teacher,” Robertson said. “She works diligently to plan and prepare lessons for her students and spends many hours outside of the 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. workday studying content and analyzing student data. I strongly believe she wants what’s good for children and her goal is to do what is right for them.
“Mrs. Darbi is an extremely compassionate teacher. She cares for her students and encourages them to work hard even when the work is hard.”
Suire is a 7th grade English Language Arts and Social Studies teacher at EMS.
“The honor is such a special validation of my accomplishments in my teaching career,” Suire said. “It has challenged me to exceed my own expectations!”
Melanie Alleman, a fellow teacher at Erath Middle, said Suire is “most deserving” of this honor.
“She is an incredible educator who has greatly impacted the lives of countless students,” Alleman said. “Amy always goes the extra mile to ensure that her students have a variety of activities to keep them engaged and excited about learning.
“She is very caring, compassionate and treats each child as if he or she were her own.”
Jacqueline Alleman is an English teacher at NVHS.
“It fills me with gratitude to be recognized for what I love doing. For me, the top honor in teaching is watching my students blossom,” Alleman said. “I feel rewarded every day just by knowing that my students, their families, and my colleagues trust that I am doing everything I can to help our kids learn and grow. Ultimately, my job is to ensure our future. And so, I believe in kids. I believe ALL students can and will succeed. In this career, failure is not an option. This is just what teaching is.
“I’m honored to represent Vermilion Parish. We are Vermilion!”
Jeri Landry, who works with Alleman at North Vermilion, said Alleman is indeed one of the best in Vermilion.
“Ms. Alleman finds the courage and inner strength to encourage her students to become the best they can be,” Landry said. “She does not accept mediocrity from herself, nor will she accept it from her students.”

Lane Marceaux of Kaplan goes low to tackle a Rams runner.

Richwood stops Kaplan from going to the Superdome

KAPLAN - The best way to beat the Kaplan Pirates is to keep their offense off the field. That is what the Richwood Rams did Friday night in front a packed E.D, Memorial Field crowd.
In the final 7:30 minutes of the game, the Rams pounded the ball down the gut of the Pirates defense, which led to a 15-8 victory over Kaplan.
It is the second straight year Kaplan falls in the Class 3A semifinals.
The Rams scored the ago-ahead touchdown with 3:48 to play in the game. It capped off a 50-yard, 8-play drive, which featured all running plays.
“We normally go with the spread offense, but I knew would could run the football up the middle,” said Richwood head coach Robert Arvie. “I told my offensive coordinator to quit throwing and just pound it.”
On the game-winning drive, Richwood tailback darted 27 yards for a first down and put the ball down to the Kaplan 28-yard-line.
The Rams drove down to the 3-yard line and called time out when they were facing a fourth down from three. After back to back time outs to figure out if they wanted to kick a field goal or go for it, the Rams went for it on fourth down. Watson found a hole to run through thanks to a massive offensive line. The two-point conversion gave the Rams a 15-8 lead.
Kaplan got one more possession with four minutes to play in the game but would turn the ball over.
“They pretty much played our game,” said Kaplan head coach Stephen Lotief. “They just stayed on the field a lot longer on offense than we did. It’s harder to play defense than offense.”
The Pirates were without fullback Braylon Romero, who broke his foot against St. James. Taking over at fullback was Rhett Menard, who also played linebacker.
Kaplan’s quarterback, Trae Case, played all game with a hurt ankle.
KHS did not score in the first half and was down 7-0.
Kaplan did manage to put together a 92-yard drive capped off with an 18-yard scoring run by Thibeaux with 3:51 left in the third frame. Menard scored two points for KHS, as the Pirates went ahead, 8-7.
It remained that way until the Rams scored the game-winner with four minutes to play in the game.
“We lost to a good team. We made mistakes and you can not do that against a team like Richwood,” Lotief added.
The Pirates had a chance to score in the second quarter. On a fourth down, from the 2, Richwood stopped them.
“They didn’t do much different than what we thought,” Lotief said. “They just outweighed us so much. We held them to 15 points, and we had our chances. The fourth-and-goal, they got theirs and we didn’t. That happens.”
Eighth-seeded Richwood (11-3) will meet West Feliciana, a 45-26 winner over Jennings, in next Friday’s Class 3A title game at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
Thibeaux finished with 116 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown.
Watson led his team with 21 carries for 105 yards and a score.

Piles of dirt have been placed on the bridge to block traffic from crossing on South John Hardy Drive.

DOTD closes bridge on South John Hardy Drive in Abbeville

Abbeville Mayor Mark Piazza received a surprise phone call from the Department of Transportation (DOTD) about the closing of a bridge in Abbeville.
DOTD informed the mayor that the small bridge on South John Hardy Drive, near the Lafitte Shopping Center, will be closed indefinitely.
Piazza said, according to DOTD’s inspection, the bridge did not meet weight payload standards, so it had to be closed until it is repaired.
The city is responsible for the cost of upgrading and repairing the bridge.
The mayor could not give a time period as to when it would be repaired.
He called School Superintendent Jerome Puyau, 911, the police department, the fire department and others to inform them of the bridge closer.
