Erath head coach Eric LeBlanc is proud of his team's second half performance.

Erath drops opener; shows spirit in 2nd half

By Bruce Brown
Special to The Meridional

YOUNGSVILLE – Erath Bobcats fans had heard the song before.
They know the pain of last year’s 1-9 season, so they could be excused for thinking Friday’s loss at Ascension Episcopal was just the latest verse in the same old song.
But those who were there could see a spark emerge, one that could lead to better things to come for first-year head coach Eric LeBlanc.
While it is true that the image-damaged visitors started slowly and fell behind 20-0 to the Blue Gators, it also is encouraging that the Bobcats scored before halftime and fought AES on even terms in the second half.
In the end, the 27-12 final score offered something to buld upon.
“From the last 5 minutes of the first half through the rest of the game, you saw who we are as a team,” said LeBlanc, a former EHS player determined to bring the program back up to speed.
“We’re a team that runs the ball. We did what we do. We came out flat and didn’t execute early in the game.”
It looked bleak when Jhalen Brown scored AES’s third touchdown and made it 20-0 with 3:51 to play in the half.
Suddenly, though, junior Luke LeBlanc led a 6-play, 66-yard touchdown drive that provided a spark. The big play was a 41-yard pass to a leaping Matt Domingues that reached the AES 6 just 48 seconds before the break.
The Bobcats crept within 20-6 on the next play, as Curtis Cormier surged over for the score.
Then it was Jax Thibodeaux’s show to begin the third period. He carried on eight runs in a 14-play, 67-yard drive that was capped by LeBlanc’s 15-yard scoring strike to Domingues.
At 20-12, it was a one-possession game.
AES responded as most seasoned playoff programs would, striking back with a touchdown to create breathing room at 27-12.
The next two EHS marches ended in interceptions, and the Gators held on for victory.
But there was much to like in Erath’s renewed effort.
Thibodeaux, who had just 6 yards in the first half, finished with 96 to pace a 120-yard ground assault.
“Jax played a lot last year, and has gotten a lot better,” LeBlanc said. “And, of course, (tackle) Jax Harrington did well for us.”
The game was also a showcase for LeBlanc (17-of-26, 191 yards), who handled pressure well much of the night, and for Domingues, who had 8 catches for 121 yards.
“We had the first-game jitters,” coach LeBlanc said. “And we came out flat.”
That’s a familiar refrain from a year ago. But the Bobcats plan on re-writing the final verse after they found their rhythm in the second half on Friday.
The re-write starts in Week 2, at home against E.D. White.

North Vermilion too much for Beau Chene

Special to the Meridional
After being on the road for the past two years, the Beau Chene Gators returned to the “swamp” with lots of pre-game energy and an excited fan base. The celebration, however, didn’t last long as the North Vermilion Patriots used a dominating run game and a stifling defense to put the game away early and took the season opener for both teams, 47-14.
The win marked the first victory for the Patriots under new head coach Brett Blakey and put the Patriots at 1-0 to start the season.
“It’s exciting to get this first win,” said Blakey, “Our kids came out and established control of the game early, and we were able to put them away by halftime. We had a few mistakes early with some penalties that we will need to clean up, but all in all, it’s a great team win to start the season.”
After a three and out defensive effort to start the game, the Patriot offense took their first drive of the season to the end zone despite penalties on three of their first five plays. Malik Criner carried the load on the drive with picking up over 30 yards on three carries in the drive as well as catching a screen pass from quarterback Garrett Backer that went for 11 yards. Becker finished off the drive with a 15-yard scamper around right end with 7:00 in the first quarter. Hunter Hulin added the first of a few PAT’s for the 7-0 lead.
A smothering defense led by Jace and Jance Miller along with Jaden Martinez on the front line stifled Beau Chene who lost 20 yards on their second drive.
Criner finished off the second Patriot drive with a 7-yard TD run. Criner added the third score from seven yards out as well. The big play in the drive was a 4th down pass conversion from Becker to Darius Gilliam for 12 yards.
After the defense continued to dominate, the Patriots sacked the punter and took over on the four-yard line where Darian Duhon scored the first of two four-yard touchdowns for him.
Criner added a 67-yard touchdown on a draw play to cap off the 40 point first half effort for North Vermilion.
Criner ended his evening in the second quarter, as did the entire Patriot first unit, with 154 yards on 13 carries and three scores. The Patriots ended up with 213 yards rushing and 22 yards passing in the first half.
Defensively the first half dominance held Beau Chene to minus 26 yards rushing and a one for eight passing performance.
The Gators did manage two scores in the second half with their starters going deep into the fourth period against many of the Patriot reserves.
Devin Martinez finished off the scoring for the Patriots with a 16-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
“We did a lot of things well and controlled both sides of the line of scrimmage. We now go back and watch film and see where we can improve and get ready for Franklin next Friday,” added Blakey.
North Vermilion is set for their home opener next Friday as they take on the Franklin Hornets at Patriot Stadium. The Hornets are coming off a 28-14 season-opening loss to Patterson, a District 8-AAA foe for the Patriots.

Kalix Broussard lands on his head after being tackled by a Loreauville player. Broussard was not hurt on the play.

VC blows out Loreauville

The Vermilion Catholic Eagles had 356 yards of total offense to cruise to a 45-6 season-opening win against the Loreauville Tigers.
It was also new VC head coach Kevin Fouquier first win as a head coach. He has been coaching football since the late 1980s and never has been a head football coach on any level.
“It feels good,” said Fouquier about his first victory. “The kids played well. We still had a few mistakes that we have correct. Overall, we were physical. We ran the football and threw the football well.”
The VC coaching staff had a game plan. They wanted to run the football from side to side and try and wear the Tigers down.
They also sprinkled in a few pass plays. Before the packed VC crowd knew it, VC led 17-0 after the first period.
in the first period, VC’s John Robert Allums nailed a 33-yard field goal.
Drew Lege completed an 11-yard TD pass to Ethan for a 10-0 lead. Drew completed a 25-yard TD-pass to Garrett Wiggins that made the score 17-0.
The Eagles were not finished scoring in the first half.
Drew completed a 33-yard touchdown pass to Colin Broussard and then right before the half, Drew ran it in from the one-yard line.
There was no looking back after leading 31-0 at halftime.
In the game, Drew completed 16 out of 29 passes for three TDs and one interception.
Seven different receivers caught passes for two VC quarterbacks
Garrett Wiggins had four catches for 51 yards. Ethan also had four for 39 yards. Others with catches were Kalix Broussard (3-15), Saul Dartez (3-39), Colin Broussard (3-42), Camden Sellers (2-27) and Alec Broussard (1-1).
Kalix led the team in rushing with 13 carries for 64 yards (five yards a carry). Andre LeBlanc had five totes for 47 yards (nine yards a carry). Moe Maxile got a chance to carry the pigskin six times for 18 yards (three yards a carry).
The Eagles scored two touchdowns in the second half. Ethan had a 78-yard punt return, and Andre LeBlanc had a three-yard TD run with five minutes to go in the game.
The Eagles are home Friday against Opelousas Catholic, who lost to Northwest, 32-22, this past Friday.

Abbeville's Deion Williams (5, with helmet off) had a busy game. He ran for 127 yards and scored three touchdowns for AHS.

Abbeville runs past West St.Mary

BALDWIN - The Abbeville Wildcats managed to hang on and beat the West St. Mary Wolves 39-30 in the season-opener for both teams on Thursday.
The Wildcats never trailed, but they also never had a comfortable lead because West St. Mary quarterback Taylon Druilhet kept his team in the game.
Druilhet threw for an impressive 283 yards en route to the loss.
Abbeville head coach Kevin Kern was happy with the win but knows his team can play better.
“It was a good win, but I know we can play better than we did,” said Kern. “We played sloppy at times, and still have things to work on, but I will take the win.”
The two teams ran different styles of offense. The Wolves threw the football, while the Wildcats (1-0) ran the football.
West St. Mary’s quarterback threw the football 35 times, and Abbeville’s running backs ran the football 56 times.
Abbeville’s new triple-option offense did what it had to do. Seven different Wildcats carried the pigskin with Deion Williams leading the way with 29 carries for 127 yards, and he scored three times.
“He is our horse, our go-to guy,” said Kern.
Abbeville scored on its opening series, which was set up by AHS linebacker Chad Celestine’s interception at midfield.
The Wildcats marched 50 yards downfield and senior running back Braeden Williams scored from the four-yard line. The kick was blocked, and Abbeville led 6-0.
Abbeville scored again on its next possession. The Wildcats went 70 yards on the ground. Braeden Williams darted six yards around the right side for a six-yard TD run. He scored the two-point conversion, and it looked like Abbeville was on its way to a blowout win.
By halftime, West St. Mary, with its passing game, crawled back into the game, down 14-12.
Druilhet threw for 143 yards at halftime for West St. Mary. Abbeville, on the other hand, rushed for 105 yards. Deion had only 33 yards on eight carries in the first half. He rushed for close to 100 yards in the second half. His longest run of the second half was for 28 yards.
Abbeville took its opening second-half possession and marched 49 yards for another score. On third down, Tavion Menard, who sat out the first half, took his first carry of the game and ran 19 yards for a first down. He finished the game with 85 yards, all gained in the second half.
Deion carried the football the next three times for 26 yards and scored from the 6. At the 8:56 mark in the third quarter, Abbeville led 20-12.
West St. Mary did not fall apart. It came right back and scored. Abbeville hung on to a 20-18 lead.
The Wildcats’ offense answered when they needed. They marched 75 yards and scored again. They had two big runs on the scoring drive. Braeden Williams darted 13 yards and quarterback Jaidyn O’Brien had an 18-yard run.
In the wishbone set, Deion had his longest run, 28 yards, of the night, for a touchdown. Jeremi Vilchis nailed the extra point and gave AHS a cushion 27-18 lead.
Abbeville extended the lead to 33-18 on Deion’s 12-yard TD run with only 6:47 to play in the game.
The Wildcats iced the game on a big run by Tavion Menard, who scooted 45 yards down the right sideline for a touchdown with 2:19 to play in the game.
O’Brien was 0-4 passing, but he ran for 31 yards on 11 carries.
Braeden Williams had six carries for 30 yards.
Abbeville is home Friday night against Church Point.

THE POST-SIGNAL / Steve Bandy
Louisiana State Police and several other agencies work a fatal crash that left two men dead in Acadia Parish Thursday morning. The crash happened on Highway 98 and McCain Road just before 8 a.m. Two cars were involved in the incident.

Acadia Parish Fatal Crash Claims Two Lives

IOTA – Shortly before 7:30 am on August 30, 2018, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a two vehicle crash that resulted in two men suffering fatal injuries on LA Hwy 3070 (McCain Rd.) at LA Hwy 98 in Acadia Parish. The crash took the lives of 40-year-old Carlos Lazo of Duson and 28-year-old Luis Estrada of Scott.
The preliminary investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Lazo was driving a 2002 Honda Civic northbound on LA Hwy 3070. At the same time, 17-year-old Caroline Gauthier of Crowley was driving a 2018 Mercedes CLA westbound on LA Hwy 98. As Lazo approached the intersection, he failed to stop, crossing into the oncoming path of Gauthier’s vehicle. As a result, the Mercedes struck the passenger door of the Honda.
Lazo and his front seat passenger Estrada sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash, and were both pronounced deceased on scene by the Acadia Parish Coroner’s Office. Lazo was properly restrained in the crash; however, Estrada was not properly restrained. Gauthier, along with her 14-year-old passenger, were both properly restrained and only suffered minor injuries. Impairment is unknown at this time, but toxicology samples were taken from both drivers and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Louisiana State Troopers would like to remind motorists that while not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Please take a moment to speak with your loved ones about the importance of their safe decisions. Remind them to always wear a seatbelt, never drive impaired, obey all traffic laws, and to avoid distractions. The conversation could lead to helping prevent a serious crash or death.
