Vermilion Parish helps foster children

Children eat gumbo, unwrap donated presents at Harvest Time

The Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) hosted their first Christmas Party Project for children and families in the program on Friday; a project that took two months to organize with hopes to grow.
Stacey Mire, supervisor for the Department of Children and Family Services, wanted to do more in her career in helping foster children and families. After realizing that Lafayette had several community and church support, she wanted to do the same for Vermilion Parish.
“Being an employee of DCFS, I could not organize this project myself” she says “I knew exactly who I wanted for the job; Lindsay Mencacci Schexnider who is a social worker through Abbeville General.”
About a year ago, Schexnider reached out to Harvest Time for support as well as parishioners asking to sponsor a family while Mire began working with Foster Friends in Lafayette in efforts to collaborate with Schexnider in getting an organization together in the parish for the children and families that are involved with DCFS.
“A lot of times, the kids need prom dresses, sports gear or birthday gifts” Schexnider says “Just a small bit to bring them smiles.” The organization hopes to do events like this several times a year.
Every year, the organization plans to have a Christmas party with games and food for the children as well as things on their wish lists. “This is actually our first event here so far. But for the kids’ birthdays there may be a parishioner who has to movie tickets that they cannot attend, so they would typically donate it and if that suits a wish list item, we will issue that as a birthday gift.”
The state only gives a recreation fee, which pays for the basic needs of a child in the system, so some of the kids don’t have much extra for holidays, birthdays, or sports.
By spreading the word, the turnout was pretty amazing, according the pair. “The community has helped so much and we cannot thank them enough.”
To prepare, each home was visited, wish lists for each child were collected, and a plan set into motion. Schexnider then went to each business and asked if they wanted to sponsor one child, or one family, and the response was incredible. Lindsay says “The businesses were thanking us for doing this for their community as we were thanking them. Every business helped us out.”
“It means the world to me because I am a social worker, I see what is missing in their lives, and we have all needed a little extra support from somewhere, and we are here to make that happen and to give our neighbors a little joy.” Lindsay Schexnider
“I think that for a long time, bigger cities have parish offices for things like this with support and recruitment efforts, and that’s something that this area doesn’t have and we want to change that. Every community needs it. In my 28 years with DCFS it has always been a struggle to get gifts for these children and thought I wasn’t doing enough. And now, we are here. We are a smaller parish with a lot of love.” Stacey Mire

Abbeville man sentenced to 63 months n prison for marijuana shipping scheme

LAFAYETTE – United States Attorney David C. Joseph announced that an Abbeville man was sentenced last week to 63 months in prison for accepting marijuana packages from California.
Jabori Huntsberry, 36, of Abbeville, Louisiana, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Elizabeth E. Foote on one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute marijuana, one count of unlawful use of a communication facility, one count of possession with intent to distribute marijuana, and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was also sentenced to two years of supervised release.
Evidence admitted at trial, which started August 27 and ended August 29, 2018, revealed that the defendant conspired to receive packages of marijuana from a California source using the U.S. postal service from October 2011 to February 2014. United States Postal Inspectors discovered that, at multiple times and using different addresses and names, Huntsberry shipped marijuana to himself. He also wired approximately $300,000 to the California contact for payment of the drug packages. Law enforcement agents conducted a controlled delivery of one of the packages on February 14, 2014, to a residence next to Huntsberry’s home in Abbeville. After an occupant took the package, agents searched both homes. A search of Huntsberry’s home produced a handwritten notebook detailing the drug activity, along with U.S. Postal Service mail labels for drug packages, money wire transfer receipts, and two firearms.
The ATF, U.S. Postal Inspection Service and Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jamilla A. Bynog and John Luke Walker prosecuted the case.

Public Notices Threatened

Print newspapers are still the primary way that tens of millions of Americans receive information about their communities and the world. They are also the way that many people find out about job opportunities. While we assume that everyone has an internet connection, the fact is that many areas of the country have limited or no internet service. According to the Federal Communications Commission, nearly 40 percent of Americans living in rural areas lack access to fixed broadband internet. Without their local newspapers providing the information and job listings they need, they would be at an extreme disadvantage.

But if the Department of Labor (DOL) has its way, these communities may soon be out of luck. On November 8, the DOL proposed to change the way temporary job openings are shared with potential workers. Currently, employers are required by law to notify U.S. workers of these openings through publishing the listings in local newspapers. However, the DOL says it now believes publishing the listings on “widely viewed” websites, instead of in print newspapers, would be sufficient, and is therefore proposing removing the print requirement and moving to digital-only listings.

The purpose of the existing policy is to ensure that job opportunities are made known to U.S. workers before they can be offered to foreign workers. By publishing announcements in the print newspaper, employers are able to reach an extremely wide audience, both geographically and in income level. Sunday newspapers – the main sources of print job listings – reach roughly 34 million adults in the U.S., according to the Pew Center for Excellence in Journalism. In many cases, newspaper publishers also publish the job listings on their websites and social media channels, as well as employment websites such as Monster.com and CareerBuilder, with whom newspapers have partnerships. The newspaper, in effect, serves as a local agency to ensure the broadest distribution of recruitment ads. If the Department of Labor ends the print requirement, it will be much more difficult for people who need jobs to find them.

Without the print requirement, job seekers will not only have a harder time finding job listings in their local newspapers, but online as well. By maintaining the print requirement and adding a digital requirement, the DOL will ensure the widest possible distribution of an ad so U.S. citizens can learn of employment opportunities.

The proposed alternative of simply posting an ad on a website would make it too easy for employers to just “check the box” and by-pass available US workers. If the Department of Labor truly wants to support its mission to serve American job seekers, it should require both print and digital distribution of recruitment ads.

Abbeville Police rewarding good drivers

It pays to be a good driver and beginning this weekend the Abbeville Police Department will be rewarding good drivers with gift cards.
An anonymous donor purchased 50 gift cards that have a balance of $20 each and presented them to the APD. Chief Bill Spearman said he is grateful for that donation and says that the donor wanted to do something nice for people this holiday season.
“The gift cards will be given out in the city of Abbeville only,” Spearman said. “Drivers who are using correct lane changes, following speed limits, etc will be followed by our marked units to their destination or by pulling the driver over and presenting them with a gift card.”
This is a positive reinforcement of safe driving habits. The police chief also wants to remind drivers that the units who will be issuing these gift cards will be in ‘marked’ units only. Spreading holiday spirit and ensuring public safety are both on the agenda for the days to come.
