French Table discussion to begin this month at Kaplan museum

By: Kaplan Museum Ann Henry, Docent

Le Musee de Kaplan is pleased to announce the much anticipated French Table discussion group will begin Saturday, January 12 at Le Musee from 10- 11 a.m.
The response has been overwhelming and the museum is looking forward to hosting the event and to see all the French speaking families, friends, and neighbors gather and return to the language of their heritage.
Everyone is invited, whether they speak French or not, but are interested in hearing the language spoken by our ancestors which, unfortunately, is quickly fading from memory.
The old adage remains true, if you don’t use it you lose it.
Many of the elderly, who were once reprimanded for speaking French at school, are now realizing since they have had no one to converse with them in French on a regular basis are forgetting the language and only remember bits and pieces or phrases. Some have forgotten their prayers in French and long to hear them again as taught by their mothers or at catechism.
After the initial meeting, it will be determined how often the meetings will continue to gather and try to make it as convenient as possible for everyone.
Le Musee is located at 405 North Cushing Boulevard, Kaplan, La. If anyone has further questions, they may be contacted at 643-1528, Wednesday through Saturday 9:00 – 1:00.
The e-mail address isoffice@kaplanlamuseum.org.

Latanier Cookers to host first gathering of the new year

The first Dutch Oven Gathering (D.O.G.)of 2019 will be held on Saturday, January 12 at Palmetto State Park.
Learning how to cook on coals would be a great accomplishment for 2019.
Latanier Cookers can help you do it. Get out the Dutch Oven you got for Christmas or your grandma’s old pot.
Latanier Cookers….Pronounced ‘lah ton ya’ is the French word for Palmetto. This group organized in April of 2013 and hosted their first D.O. G. at Palmetto Island State Park.
Latanier cookers hosts a D.O.G. (a.k.a Dutch Oven Gatherings) on the second Saturday of each month at Palmetto. These gatherings are relaxed and informal. Families are welcome. There is often a little music playing in the area. Before lunch, cookers and visitors drift around the area asking questions, discussing recipes, tips and techniques, checking out all the neat ’tools’ that other cookers use in their outdoor kitchens.
If you’ve never seen a Dutch oven cooker in action, you’ll have lots of questions. Experienced cookers have gotten the process down to a ‘science’ and love to visit about Dutch oven cooking.
Latanier Cookers usually make arrangements to have a main meal, which is prepared on site. Cookers and visitors contribute the Dutch oven dish of their choice. All cooks are welcomed!
The chapter’s goal is ‘the gathering’. So whether you cooked in a Dutch oven on coals or not, you’re welcome to share your food at these gatherings. Covered dishes are welcome too. Pots go on the table at noon. It’s a super cast iron buffet.
You’ll enjoy food from black iron pots like: corn breads, cobblers, bread puddings, beans, casseroles, Jalapeno bread, sweet potato soufflé, biscuits, Holly Beach potatoes, rolled round steak, pork roast….and the list goes on and on.
The cookers really enjoy testing their skills with new recipes, so the menu is always exciting and new.
Plan your next camping trip to Palmetto Island State Park on the second Saturday of each month...you’ll be in for a treat.
How much more Cajun can you get than that? Gathering around food has served as a focus for all manner of occasions and has been an important part of life for the people of Louisiana. The motto above holds almost everything the Cajun souls crave.
While the D.O.G. is free, entrance park fees do apply.
