22nd Daylily Festival and Garden Show set for Saturday in Abbeville

The 22nd Daylily Festival and Garden Show will be held in Magdalen Square on Saturday, June 1, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. 
The festival is presented by Abbeville Main Street and the Vermilion Chamber of Commerce. Although daylilies are the festival’s feature flower, all gardening will be highlighted this Saturday. 
The Daylily Festival is not just for adults! The Abbeville Garden Club, located in the Gazebo, has a children’s activity booth, as it did in the past.   This year, participants will create an Herb Garden Greenhouse, which will introduce the children to herbs, planting, and what is needed to have a successful garden. 
 Once completed, the Greenhouse is theirs to take home. A “storytime” will be held in the Gazebo at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 2 p.m. 
The Abbeville Garden Club members will be available to answer your gardening needs.
Daylilies, a favorite of many, may be the most carefree of all flowering perennials. 
The plants grow quickly and are long-lived. They thrive in almost any type of soil, grow in sun or part shade, and are rarely troubled by insect pests or disease. Daylilies are known for their toughness, but their colorful and abundant flowers are dazzling. 
The Abbeville Cultural & Historical Alliance Center will be the location for the educational speakers.  At 10 a.m., Stuart Gauthier, LSU Ag- Center Agent-Horticulture, St Martin, St Mary and Iberia Parish will give us a Daylily Update. Stuart is credited for being part of the first Daylily Festival. His guidance in those early years has helped make the festival such a success.
Maddox Miller will follow at 11 a.m.  
 Miller is an Associate Extension Agent-Horticulture with Lafayette and Vermilion Parishes. 
 His topic will be Louisiana Super Plants. The Louisiana Super Plant Program is an educational campaign highlighting tough and beautiful plants performing well in Louisiana Landscapes.  The future gardeners of Vermilion will announce the 4-H Garden Contest winners after the educational speakers. 
The Daylily Festival is presented by Abbeville Main Street and the Vermilion Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Abbeville Cultural Center and Historical Alliance. Sponsors are the City of Abbeville, the Abbeville Garden Club and Gulf Coast Bank.

Kaplan Mayor announces planned outage for Friday morning; repairs will be made to Abshire Addition electrical breaker

KAPLAN — The City of Kaplan will have a planned electrical outage this Friday morning May 31, 2024 beginning at 6 a.m.
Mayor Mike Kloesel said the outage is necessary so that workers can make repair the city’s Abshire Addition electrical breaker.
“Our electrical department will work as quickly and safely as possible,” Kloesel said. “Please know that this area will be without power for three to four hours while we make these necessary repairs.”

Abbeville High hires former LSU player as its new head football coach

Jonathan Zenon leaves Breaux Bridge to be head coach

Abbeville High School’s new head football coach has been mentored by the best college football coach of all time, one of the top high school football coaches in Louisiana, and several NFL assistant football coaches.
Abbeville High Principal Phillip Freeman announced that he hired Jonathan Zenon as the school’s new head coach. 
Zenon graduated from Breaux Bridge High School in the early 2000s and helped lead the Tigers to the quarterfinal round in the playoffs under former Breaux Bridge coach Mike Mowad. 
For LSU football fans, the name Jonathan Zenon may sound familiar.
Abbeville’s new football coach, Jonathan Zenon, was part of the LSU Tigers’ two national football titles under two different head coaches, both of whom may ring a bell.
 In 2003, his red-shirt freshman year, head coach Nick Saban guided the Tigers to a national title.
Then, in his senior year in 2007, head coach Les Miles coached LSU to a national title.
Zenon played left cornerback for the championship team. However, his most significant college moment came against the Tennessee  Volunteers in the SEC Championship game during his senior year.
The Tigers were trailing 14-13 with 9:54 remaining in the game, Zenon intercepted a pass and returned it for a game-winning touchdown. The interception was ranked as one of the 10 most memorable individual performances in the history of SEC championship games.
Zenon started his final two years as a cornerback and finished with 91 tackles and nine interceptions. 
He went undrafted in the NFL but signed with the New York Jets for one year. Zenon stayed in the NFL for two more years. 
Zenon has been an assistant football coach at Breaux Bridge High School for the last four years, and he was the defensive coordinator for three of those four years.
His defense has been one of the toughest in the district in the past three years.
“I am ready to be a head coach,” Zenon said Wednesday. “My experience has prepared me. “I have learned a lot from Nick Saban, Les Miles and Corey Raymond. They have taught me to be a student of the game. To know what is happening around you. I plan to teach that to the players at Abbeville.”
Zenon’s love is on the defensive side of the football because of his past. When he gets to Abbeville, he is expected to bring a couple of assistant coaches who have played college football and know how to run an offense.
The new coaches will observe the players and then adjust their offense to the players’ strengths, he said. He likes to keep it simple and run “Veer” or “Power I” offensive formations. The spread offense is also in the mix.
“Nick Saban surrounded himself with good coaches. I plan to do the same,” he added.
Leaving Breaux Bridge High School will be difficult because he fostered a “family” atmosphere there. He aims to cultivate a similar coaching relationship at Abbeville High School.
“I believe the kids at Breaux Bridge High are similar to those at Abbeville High,” said Zenon. “I want the kids at Abbeville to know they can come and talk to me if they have problems or need help. It’s not always about sports.”

Officer arrests man who allegedly robbed Wendy’s in Abbeville

A man who said he wanted to return money to Wendy’s in Abbeville has been arrested for allegedly stealing the cash in the first place.
On Monday, May 27, at approximately 10:50 p.m., the Abbeville Police Department (APD) responded to a call of Simple Robbery at Wendy’s located at 2307 Veterans Memorial Dr.
The complainant advised that a white male had robbed them by grabbing a handful of money out of the register. The suspect then ran out of the door.
Two and a half hours later while APD was patrolling the area, an officer observed a white male running in the fields behind Walgreens, not far from the Wendy’s location. The officer then watched the subject enter the Walgreens parking lot and run toward the back of the building. The officer pulled into the parking lot and observed the subject twice fall into a small ditch. When the officer approached the subject, he had a handful of money and said he wanted to return it to Wendy’s at that time.
The dispatcher advised the officer that Wendy’s had called the Abbeville Police Department and said they had been robbed.
The subject, Casey Paul Eskind, 36, of 516 Fulton St. New Iberia, was apprehended and transported to Abbeville General Hospital due to his stating that his leg was hurting. He was treated and released to the Abbeville Police Department where he was booked on one count of Simple Robbery and transported to Vermilion Parish Correctional Center.

Norman Ray Hoffpauir

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2024 at 2 p.m. at Gossen Funeral Home Chapel in Rayne, LA for Norman Ray Hoffpauir, 91, who died Monday, May 27, 2024.
Interment will be in the Indian Bayou Cemetery in Rayne, LA.
Pastor Chris Blanchard of Indian Bayou Church will conduct the funeral services.
Norman was a teacher, guidance counselor and coach. He graduated from Indian Bayou High School in 1951 and attained a Bachelor of Art degree from SLI, a Masters from McNeese and an Education Specialist degree from USL in 1974. He taught at Sulphur Jr. High in February-June 1957, Crowley High School in 1957-1964, Crowley Jr. High in 1964-1967, Kaplan High School in 1967-1986, and retired in 1986. He was a member of the Vermilion Parish Retired Teachers Association and LA Teachers Retired Association.
Norman married Della Landry on December 22, 2962. They had three children, Julie, Joel and Wynn. They were married for 62 years.
He had an unending passion for teaching others and educated many students across Vermilion Parish. Norman had a great love and passion for the game of golf and made his first trip to Augusta in 1999. Norman and his wife, Della, also hold many trophies for their love of bowling. He was an expert family historian and took much pride in researching and recording his family's genealogy. He loved being on his tractor working in the country and showing off his beautiful garden of roses and variety of other flowers. Above all, he loved his family and was so proud of his five grandsons.
Survivors include his wife, Della Landry Hoffpauir, daughter, Julie Hoffpauir, son, Wynn Hoffpauir and wife Melissa Hoffpauir, sister, Linda Trahan and daughter Carmen Touchet, five grandchildren, Dylon Hoffpauir, Drake Hoffpauir and spouse Malani, Drew Hoffpauir, Dax Hoffpauir, Joshua Hoffpauir, 1 great grandchild, daughter-in-law, Rachel Hoffpauir.
He was preceded in death by his son, Joel Hoffpauir, father, James Ivy Hoffpauir, mother, Margaret Harrington Hoffpauir, brother, James Hoffpauir and spouse Irene Hoffpauir, nephew, Mark Hoffpauir.
Pallbearers will be Dylon Hoffpauir, Drew Hoffpauir, Dax Hoffpauir, Joshua Hoffpauir, Wynn Hoffpauir, Frank Touchet.
The family requests that visitation be observed in Gossen Funeral Home in Rayne, LA on Wednesday, May 29, 2024 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
