Jim, a resident of Lafayette, LA was the son of the late James “Buck” Buchanan and the former Ruby Reed. Jim was born in Jackson, MS in 1946 and grew up in Abbeville, LA where he graduated from Abbeville High School in 1964. He later graduated from The University of Southwestern Louisiana with a degree in Petroleum Engineering in 1969. While he was working for Mobil, Jim was drafted into the Army in 1970. After his service he returned to Mobil and then continued his career with Superior Oil, Meridian Resources, and retired from Burlington Resources in 1996.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Phyllis Lene Buchanan; his children Christie Jeanmard (spouse Jim Jeanmard) and Brett Buchanan (spouse Cindy Buchanan); his grandchildren Sloane Arena (spouse Christen Arena), Slade Arena, Lilah Jeanmard, Caroline Mocek (spouse Dylan Mocek), Lauren and Carter Buchanan. Jim also had bonus grandchildren Coby Janik (spouse Samantha Janik), Brooke and Andrew Janik; Sister, Karen Buchanan Neveu (spouse Lavelle Neveu). He is also survived by Gracie, his beloved Bichon Frise, the destroyer of everything of value and expensive items. Jim is now in heaven, finally, wearing a belt that has not been chewed or shredded by her.
His constant companion was his wife, Phyllis; they loved going to their lake house in Toledo Bend. Jim loved fishing and hunting with his son, and he was his daughter’s first love, and her go-to for advice. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, who were blessed to go on many vacations that most people can only dream of. He has now joined so many of his family dogs, who are waiting at Rainbow Bridge for him. He was known to all as being extremely witty and the life of the party. He was exceedingly kind, fair, and generous to a fault. Jim a.k.a. “Pop” will be greatly missed by all.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
