Abbeville High now has new resource officer

Abbeville Chief of Police Mike Hardy had numerous department members approach him about becoming the new resource officer at Abbeville High School.
Officer Anaiz Gonzalez did so first, mainly because she was eager to fill a role she saw as vitally important.
“I am a single mom of six kids,” Gonzalez said. “I have five of my own and one adopted. I have seen a lot of things that youth go through in school. I think kids need someone they can talk to, somebody they may relate with a little more.
“I wanted to give whatever I had to this because they are good kids.”

Drought stress affecting crawfish production

CROWLEY — It’s a few months early for most people in Louisiana to have crawfish on their minds. But the cycle of producing crawfish for those eagerly anticipated springtime boils is already underway — and this summer’s drought conditions could have an impact.
Three key problems are facing Louisiana’s $230 million crawfish industry as the state copes with the effects of a weekslong streak of record-high temperatures and minimal rainfall.

Lease agreement signed

The building of Vermilion Charter Academy is now on its way to taking place.
In May 2020, the volunteer board from the Maurice area first met to discuss bringing a charter school to the northern part of the parish to help with overcrowding in the public schools.
On Tuesday, more than three years later, their vision became a reality.

Local real estate company buys Chapel Downs Apartments

Tucked away off Port Street in Abbeville is one of the nicest apartment complexes in the city. Since the mid-1980s, Chapel Downs Apartments has been the home of many residents over the last 40 years. Today, the apartment complex now has a new owner.
This week, Royal House Buyers out of Abbeville purchased the apartments for an undisclosed amount.
Rhett Hebert, the owner of Royal House Buyers, purchased the property.
“It is in excellent condition,” said Hebert. “We are going to make a few upgrades in some of the apartments, like changing the floors and painting.”
