City Council waives cap on auxiliary unit for police department
As the Abbeville Police Department continues to deal with the effects of the shooting of one of its own, the Abbeville City Council met Friday morning to approve a plan to help the already short-handed department.
The Council voted unanimously during an emergency meeting to lift the cap on the amount of auxiliary officers that can be utilized by the department. That cap had previously been set at 12. Chief of Police Bill Spearman said the move by the Council will allow him to be able to use officers that are being sent by agencies from around the state.
