Erath's Avery Hebert among LSU’s Tiger 12

BATON ROUGE – Avery Hebert, of Erath, is among the Tiger Twelve Senior Recognition Class of 2023.
Class members were recognized at a ceremony on Saturday, April 29 held in the Capstone Gallery at Patrick F. Taylor Hall on the LSU campus.
Hebert is an agribusiness major with a minor in political science. During her four years at LSU, Hebert was involved in numerous extracurricular activities on campus, including serving as an LSU Student Government executive staff member and College of Agriculture Les Voyager.

Teen charged with attempted murder charge in ZaZa’s Lounge shooting

The Abbeville Police Department arrested and charged 19-year-old Tavian Young of Abbeville with attempted first-degree murder and illegal use of a firearm.
His total bail was set at $500,000.
According to Abbeville Police Chief Mike Hardy, the charges stem from the ZaZa’s Hookah Lounge shooting on 1600 block of Veterans Memorial Drive on Feb. 24.
Four people were injured in the shooting that night.
At least a couple hundred people were gathered outside for an after party at the lounge and the adjacent parking lot, he said.

Police Jury bringing first fire training center to Vermilion Parish

Training is one of the most critical chapters in the story of a firefighter’s career.
In the near future, firefighters across the 15 departments in Vermilion Parish will have access to a local three-story facility to further that training.
A fire training building is currently being constructed for the Vermilion Parish Police Jury. Located on West Port Street in Abbeville, the building with allow firefighters throughout Vermilion Parish to train for structure fires in a controlled environment.

KAPLAN — Kaplan is the Mardi Gras capital of Vermilion Parish, so it’s fitting that a new mural being created there depicts the celebration.
And that local students taking part in Louisiana Heritage Connections (Lâche pas) class are helping to create the mural, it’s fitting that it depicts a local, traditional version of the celebration.
Rene Rost Middle School students, taking part in the Lâche pas class, have joined with members of the Rotary Club of Abbeville and its satellite, After-Hours Club, to place a mural on the side of Piazza Office Supply in Kaplan.

Liz Touchet

Liz Touchet seeks to continue family legacy of public service

Elizabeth “Liz” Touchet has announced her candidacy for Vermilion Parish Police Jury, District 5 to succeed her husband Wayne Touchet who passed away last year.
She became the first female police juror to take the oath of office in Vermilion Parish in July of 2022, when she was appointed to serve the remainder of her husband’s term.
