Metal detectors still in use in Vermilion Parish

In October, the Vermilion Parish School Board ramped security by placing metal detectors in all schools. Five months later, the metal detectors are still being used today.
At 99 percent of the schools, the metal detectors are randomly used three days a week. In other words, the school administration decides when students have to walk through the metal detectors.
Some schools can use metal detectors before entering or walking out of the classroom.

Vermilion Parish School Board has trouble finding property insurance

Homeowners of Vermilion Parish can relate to the problems of the Vermilion Parish School Board when finding insurance for the school district’s buildings.
The school district hired the company, Arthur Gallagher, to find companies to ensure the school district’s vehicles, like buses and trucks, along with buildings and schools.
Getting quotes for vehicles and flood insurance was the easy part, said Marrian Laughlin of Arthur Gallagher. However, finding an insurance company to insure the school district’s buildings takes more work.

Denham Springs man arrested in Abbeville on rape, false imprisonment charges

On Sunday, March 19, at 1:08 p.m., The Abbeville Police Department received a complaint of a man pulling a handgun out on his ex-girlfriend on Schlessinger Street.
Upon arrival officers spoke with the victim who stated that her ex-boyfriend Mathew Scott went to her house with a handgun and raped her.
The victim was transported to Abbeville General Hospital so a Rape Kit could be administered. Officers then got a statement as to what occurred at the victim's residence.

Abbeville Mayor says everyone ‘feels it’ when crime occurs

At the second town hall meeting in Abbeville, Abbeville Mayor Roslyn White told the crowd that everyone “feels it” when a crime is committed in the city.
The meeting was held Tuesday at the Praise Church on Lyman Street, near J.H. Williams Middle School.
The council and Mayor Roslyn White held the meeting in District A, councilman Tony Hardy’s district.
White told the crowd that the public meetings are being held in districts with the most crime in the city. Next month’s third meeting will be held in District D.

LDWF to Remove Illegal Nutria Pet From Owners, Plans to Turn It Over to Baton Rouge Zoo

A family's pet nutria is set to be removed from the home of a New Orleans couple and moved to the Baton Rouge Zoo to be part of an educational exhibit, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) announced Thursday.
It is illegal to have a wild animal as a pet, especially a nutria.
