Vermilion 4-H Achievement Day dedicated to Michelle Gaspard

The 2023 Vermilion Parish 4-H Achievement Day, held on Saturday, March 18, honored Michelle Gaspard.
Gaspard began her 4-H journey in 1980 as a young 4-H member in the Kaplan Elementary club. She was an active member throughout high school where she served as President of the Vermilion 4-H Executive Committee. She earned numerous awards including the National Engineering trip to Virginia and the coveted National 4-H Congress trip to Chicago, Illinois.

Talented Visual Arts Program has art exhibit in Abbeville

For the last 17 years, the Vermilion Parish School Board has facilitated a Talented Visual Art program for students identified as talented in the Visual Arts in Vermilion Parish. According to the Louisiana Department of Education, students with extraordinary visual arts talent may be eligible for additional educational support to pursue their art.
This school year began with a record 61 students representing 15 schools in grades 1st through 12th.

Kaplan’s Roberts elected LA FCCLA State President

As students return from the Louisiana Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) 2023 State Leadership Conference, one Vermilion Parish student is coming back to Kaplan High School with a new role to fill for the next year. John Roberts, son of Johnny and Kathy Roberts, was elected to serve as the Louisiana Association of FCCLA State President.

Louisiana Cattle Festival welcomes new royalty; Amelia Detraz of Kaplan named Queen

On Saturday, March 4 and Sunday, March 5, the Louisiana Cattle Festival and Fair Association proudly welcomed a new group of royalty to reign over the 73rd Louisiana Cattle Festival, scheduled for October of 2023.
The newly crowned kings and queens are tasked with promoting the festival during their year-long reign in addition to representing the festival and fair association, the state’s cattle industry, the City of Abbeville and Vermilion Parish.

3rd grade students read 172,379 minutes within the 4 week competition

3rd Graders at Seventh Ward Elementary are READING STATE CHAMPS!

The third graders at Seventh Ward Elementary School recently competed in a world wide AND state level 4 week reading competition called READBowl. READBowl along with “Share the Magic Foundation” was created by former NFL Patriots player Malcolm Mitchell to encourage children to read. Teams from all 50 states and 7 countries competed to read for the most minutes per week. The 3rd grade team, led by school librarian Mrs. Nicole Duhon, was called “Mrs. Nicole’s Ragin’ Cajun Readers”. The team ranked in the top 25 teams 3 weeks in a row in the global Big 3 Conference.
