LAFAYETTE — As Louisiana officials have looked for cost-cutting measures amid budget issues, one option that has come up is reforming the criminal justice system.
Gov. John Bel Edwards received a plan from the Louisiana Justice Reinvestment Task Force two weeks ago. The plan covers a year of examination of sentencing and trends.

For many years Gulf Coast Bank has been a major supporter of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Acadiana and the event each year that gets all of the GCB staff involved is The Great Acadiana Running of the Ducks!
The Running of the Ducks is a major fundraiser for our local Boys and Girls Clubs that allows you to make a difference by purchasing $5 raffle tickets (Ducks). You can “adopt” (purchase) a Single Duck (1 Duck) for $5, a Six Quack (6 Ducks) for $25, or a Grand Quack (25 Ducks) for $100. You can also purchase a Duck T-shirt, printed at the local Boys and Girls Club print shop.

Abbeville Fire Department once again helping group with baby supply drive

The drive to collect baby supplies for young, single mothers began last year at the Abbeville Fire Department with the hopes of it growing.
For its second year, it has.
A Pregnancy Center & Clinic, a non-profit groups based out of Lafayette, is once again partnering with the Abbeville Fire Department. This year, the Lafayette Fire Department has joined to help the cause. A Pregnancy Center & Clinic, a non-profit organization, has its home office in Lafayette. It’s pantry that helps single mothers is called Grace’s Closet.

Hue Martin was in custody of the Beaumont police. He will be brought back to Kaplan to face charges.

Hit and run suspect arrested

The hit and run suspect who hit a Kaplan policeman last week while fleeing from police was arrested in Beaumont, TX today.

According to Chief of Police Boyd Adams, Huey R. Martin was arrested by the Beaumont police. Two Kaplan police officers are currently enroute to bring him back to Kaplan to face his charges.

Kaplan Police Department honors Deputy Soriez for act

Vermilion Parish Sheriff Deputy Jeremiah Soriez attended the Kaplan City Council meeting last Thursday where he was awarded a Lifesaving Award for his unselfish act.
Soriez was on routine patrol in the parish when he ran across a vehicle which had committed a traffic violation. When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, the violator fled with the officer in pursuit.
The chase led to Kaplan where the runaway crashed his vehicle into his ex-girlfriend’s house and the subject fled on foot. He was later found dead under a nearby house.
