Abbeville wins first home opener in nine years

It is been nine years since the Abbeville Wildcats won its season opener. But thanks to a stingy defense and a gutsy performance by fullback Dieon Williams, the Wildcats notched anbig win in their belt.
Abbeville opened the year with a 19-12 win over West St. Mary. Back in 2008, Abbeville also beat West St. Mary to open the season under then head coach Ward Courville.

Gueydan survives in hot, marathon of a game

GUEYDAN - The Gueydan Bears somehow survived a long, hot season-opener Saturday afternoon.
It may have been the first-ever Vermilion Parish high school football game to start at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Three hours, and with the temperature around 91 degrees, the Bears beat North Central Hurricanes 50-44.
One third of the Bears were cramping all second half.
Gueydan had jumped out to a quick 30-0 lead in the first half but then by the time the half was over, Gueydan looked warn out but was still leading 36-14.

Most Friday football games in Vermilion Parish moved to Saturday

Five out of six high school coaches moved their first game of the season to Saturday because of wet fields.
The only game still scheduled for Friday is Kaplan’s road game to Acadiana High in Scott.
Delcambre was scheduled to travel to South Cameron on Friday, but that game was completely canceled.
Tentatively, the Gueydan Bears will play against North Central on Saturday at 11 a.m. The start of the game may be pushed back, depending on the weather.
Head coach Roderick Moy said playing on Saturday gives his field another day to dry out.

Kaplan moves jamboree to Thursday

Over the years, playing football in August is almost a guarantee there will be rain either by a tropical storm, hurricane or just lots of rain.
Once again, Mother Nature is creating havoc on high school before the season even began.
After six years of not playing one another, parish schools from Acadia and Vermilion parish are joining forces to create the Acadian/Vermilion parish jamboree.
Tonight, Kaplan, Abbeville, Erath, and North Vermilion are joining forces to battle Crowley, Rayne, Lake Arthur and Church Point.
