Cajun party Saturday in Maurice

MAURICE - There will be a bunch of Cajuns partying Saturday in Maurice for the ninth annual Cajun Culture Association Grand Gathers.

The gathering, which will feature four bands, will take place at the Woodmen of the World Hall in Maurice.

“The purpose of this organization is to pursue and promote Cajun culture and attract tourism in the Acadiana area,” said Ricky Benoit, president of the Cajun Culture Association.

The doors open at 9 a.m. and admission is $12 per couple or $8 per person. Children under 12 will be admitted free.

The entertainment will begin at 9 a.m. with the playing of the band, “The Outlaws.”

Eula Gaspard and Donny Broussard will be given special awards while they play.

Between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., Brett Denais and T-Rouge will perform. Around that time, the King and Queen of the Cajun Culture Association will be honored.

The entertainment continues when Cajun Express will play. Around 3 p.m., Russell Gary and Belton Richard will be the Cajun Culture honorees.

The final band to play is Donny Broussard and the La. Stars from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

At the end of the day, a drawing will take place. Top prize is a 32 inch flat screen TV.

The association has been together since 1987 and founded by Elie Courville.

The money raised from the gathering helps pay travel expenses for two students who go to Canada through the French Emersion Program.

The organization also helps with the study and playing French Cajun Music.

Also, every year the organization has an essay contest for children ages seven to 17 years old. One child is selected to be given fiddle lessons and another child is chosen to receive accordion lessons.

This year’s winners are: to learn the accordion is 10-year-old Madison Trahan of Duson and 9-year-old Tanner Benoit of Rayne.
