KHS Beta shines at national convention

The Kaplan High School Beta team were recognized last week by city and parish officials for achieving what no other school in Vermilion Parish has ever done.
The students came home with a first place trophy for winning the talent competition at the National Beta Convention.
“We competed against 13 other states,” said Eva Lange, KHS Beta sponsor.
“These kids are the most hard working, dedicated and talented group I have ever worked with. They have worked countless hours practicing, and then practiced some more.”
Lange added that the “Mary Poppins” production performed by the team was choreographed by a former KHS Beta student, Matthew Couvillon, who is currently living in California.
“When it came time to announce the winner,” said Lange, “I called him and put the phone on speaker phone so he could be a part of it. When it was announced we had won, he was screaming just as loud as we were. It was overwhelming!”
The road to the national competition was a win at local level, district level, state level then the nationals in Orlando, Florida.
At the reception, Mayor Linda Hardee praised the group and told them this honor would benefit them for the rest of their lives.
“My goodness, what an honor you have brought to our city! Your performance has put us on the map. I give you kudos and accolades,” she said.”
Beta sponsors are Eva Lange and Mindi Herpin.
