Comeaux named Citizen of the Month
By Judy T. Mire, Managing Editor
Joe Comeaux- Councilwoman Eva Dell Morrison named Joe Comeaux as her Citizen of the Month. Joseph “Joe” Comeaux was born in 1935 in Duson to the late Whitney and Olivia Comeaux. He is the oldest of six siblings.
On Sept. 15, 1959 he married Lucy Montgomery. They will celebrated their golden anniversary this year.
Together, the couple have seven children, three boys and four girls, 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
After retiring several years ago, he decided retirement was not for him and went to work at Kaplan High School as a custodian. He is known for keeping one of the cleanest school grounds in Kaplan. He takes pride in what he does because the KHS football field is spectacular because of his outstanding work.
Joe was recently selected as School Support Personnel 2008-2009 in the parish.
He is a parishioner of Holy Rosary/Cabrini Parish, an usher, a member and treasurer of Knights of Peter Claver, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also awarded the Martin Luther King Jr. Award in 2002 for his outstanding service to church and community.
Approximately one year ago, Joe was diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer. As of now, he is still taking chemo treatment every 2-3 months. However, this cancer does not stop him from driving the tractor at KHS. The only difference is that he is now under an umbrella. It also does not stop him from washing cars and going to the casino.
When asked about retiring again, he said, “not now”.
He likes to work hard during the day so he can enjoy his favorite dessert at night, cookies and ice cream.
